Over the past decade, a team from Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, McKinsey & Company, and Stanford has systematically surveyed global management. Well managed firms thrash their poorly managed competitors

The American Management Century

Second, when it comes to overall management, American firms outperform all others. This U.S. dominance occurs in the manufacturing, retail, and health care sectors (but interestingly, not in high schools). Japanese, German, and Swedish firms follow closely behind. In contrast, developing countries like Brazil, China, and India lag at the bottom of the management charts. Southern European countries like Portugal and Greece appear to have management practices barely better than those of most developing countries. In the middle stand countries like the UK, France, Italy, and Australia, which have reasonable but not brilliant management practices.

Bottom dwellers drive the rankings down

While the ranking of countries is certainly eye-catching, the real story lies within the countries. Almost 90% of the cross-country differences are driven by the size of the "tail" of really badly managed firms within each country. Countries like the U.S. that excel have hardly any badly managed firms, while those like India that have low average scores have a mass of very badly managed firms pulling down their averages.

Every country has some world-class firms

But while there are many of these extremely badly managed, every country also hosts some excellent firms. Even bottom-ranking India has dozens of firms that use world-class management practices. A key takeaway is that individual companies are not trapped by the national environments in which they operate — there are top performers in all countries surveyed. Conversely, being in a world-class environment like the U.S. does not guarantee success. Even in America, more than 15% of firms are so badly managed that they are worse than the average Chinese or Indian firm.

What is the secret sauce of management success?

One of the biggest drivers of these differences is variation in people management. American firms are ruthless at rapidly rewarding and promoting good employees and retraining or firing bad employees. The reasons are threefold.

1. The U.S. has tougher levels of competition. Large and open U.S. markets generate the type of rapid management evolution that allows only the best-managed firms to survive.

2. Human capital is important. America traditionally gets far more of its population into college than other nations.

3. The U.S. has more flexible labor markets. It is much easier to hire and fire employees.

Many developing-country firms, even while trying to implement new techniques like Lean Management, ignore the fact that labor is different from other "inputs." Many of the Chinese firms surveyed did not even employ managers who spoke the same language as the workers, relying on interpreters or basic sign-language for communication. As you can imagine, this does not lead to a feeling of mutual support between management and workers.

But the U.S. should not be complacent. Other countries equal or better the U.S. in some of the other areas of management we examined, such as careful monitoring, lean production, and sensible targets. The manufacturing prowess of Germany, which has helped it weather the recent downturn so well, is built upon such advantages. Furthermore, although Chinese management practices are well below U.S. standards, they showed the fastest improvement since 2006 of any country we have looked at.

Changing the ranks and reaping the rewards

The answer is not for all firms to be more American but rather to consider some of the practices U.S. firms—and especially U.S. multinationals—continually exhibit and implement. In addition to reducing pollution, many nations, such as the United States, have talked about energy independence. While taxis burn LPG instead of petrol in a normal internal combustion engine, hydrogen fuel cells are quite a different beast.

While fuel cells may sound fancy, they are actually quite similar to batteries. Like batteries, fuel cells generate electricity, meaning that any car that runs off a fuel cell is actually an electric car. Also like batteries, fuel cells mix two chemicals that react to produce an electric current.

However, the important difference with fuel cells is that, unlike batteries, they do not store energy internally. But obstacles remain. Saab's suppliers need convincing that Spyker will be able to pay its bills regularly. And the biggest part of the deal with Pang Da, which will see the Chinese firm pay €65m for a 24% stake in the Dutch group, needs regulatory approval from Swedish stakeholders and the Chinese authorities – and that will take time. Saab has a complex ownership structure.

A bigger problem is that Saab needs to set up a manufacturing joint venture in China to gain exposure to the booming Asian market. But Pang Da is not a producer, so the hunt is on to find a Chinese carmaker prepared to join the alliance. Only then will Saab have any hope of a go-ahead from Beijing.

During its 20 years under GM ownership, Saab hardly ever turned a profit. The popular view was that as GM's finances deteriorated (it had to be bailed out by the US government in 2009), it starved Saab of investment.

But Spyker, headed by the enigmatic Victor Muller, has hardly been more successful. Last year, it produced just 32,000 cars, shy of its 50,000 target and well below the 120,000 that analysts believe it needs to break even. Hence the liquidity crisis.

According to Garel Rhys at Cardiff business school, Saab has been on borrowed time for years. "People call it a niche player but it's going up against the likes of BMW, which sells 1.2m units a year. Nor does it have a big backer like Audi, owned by Volkswagen. These days, you need to be a global player, and Saab isn't one."

Saab's heyday was in the 1970s and 80s, when it was one of the first car firm to popularize the turbocharger and the front-wheel drive.

Tim Urquhart, an analyst with IHS Global Insight, says recently Saab has been unable to differentiate itself from its German rivals. And it needs to come up with successful new models, in particular a replacement for its nine-year-old 9-3, its most popular car.

He says: "If Saab is going to work in China, it probably needs to go more upmarket. The Chinese don't want a reheated old-fashioned product. They want something classy and new."

Arguably, what Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has done with MG Rover could be a template for Saab. SAIC is creating new models out of MG for the Chinese market, and slowly introducing them to Europe. The new MG6 five-door "fastback" is a case in point.

But that still leaves Saab fumbling for a Chinese manufacturing partner, and it must be a good one. SAIC is China's biggest carmaker. Geely, which took over Volvo last year, is the country's fifth-largest. "It's important they get in bed with the right company because the Chinese are looking to consolidate the sector, so an alliance with a two-bit player won't work," says Rhys.

Last week, Muller said he was optimistic about Pang Da, which he described as "a forward-looking, profitable and well-capitalised public company that sees enormous potential for our brand in their home market."

Pang Qinghua, chief executive of Pang Da, was equally enthusiastic, saying new products such as the new Saab 9-5 and 9-4X, "make this the right time for Saab to enter the Chinese market". Rules For Business In Kuwait:-The rules of commerce are in general similar to West European practice.
Any Kuwaiti or GCC national over 21 years of age may carry on commerce in Kuwait provided he or she is not affected by a personal legal restriction. But a foreigner (non-GCC national) may not carry on a trade unless he or she more Kuwaiti partners and the capital owned by the Kuwaiti partners(s) in the joint business is not less than 51 % of the total capital (60 % in the case of banks, investments houses and insurance companies). A foreign firm (including a partnership) may not set up a branch and may not perform any commercial activities in the country except through a Kuwait agent. Foreign individuals and firms may not acquire commercial licences in there own name nor may they own real estate locally.
The main laws regulating business in Kuwait, which have been amended several times since they were issued, are (a) The civil code (Law 67 of 1980), (b) The commercial code (Law 68 of 1980), and (c) The commercial companies law (Law 15 of 1960).
Is Business License Necessary ?

To do business, silences is necessary. General trading, contracting, importing and industrial license are issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MCI). For particular commercial activities, specific licences are requierd and these are often issued by the ministry that controls that activity, eg publishing licenses are granted by the Ministry of Information.
Business licenses are only issued to Kuwaiti nationals and Kuwait companies and. In some cases, to GCC nationals and companies. Costs are usually KD100 per licenses, All licenses require period renewal, normally even two years.
The right to import goods into Kuwait on a commercial basis is restricted to Kuwait individuals and firms who are member of the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) and who have import licenses issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MCI).

Import License Is Required:
General import licenses, which must be renewed annually, allow any amount of a variety of products from any country to be imported any number of times. But special licenses are needed to bring in regulated products such as arms, ammunition and explosive, ethyl alcohol, drugs, pesticides, jewellery and precious stone, weights and weighing machines, vintage cars, etc; these too must be renewed annually. Special licences are also needed to import industrial equipment and spare parts; these are issued to industrial firms upon the recommendation of the public Authority for industry and are valid for a single use only.
To protect local morals, alcoholic beverages and materials used in making them, pigs, pork, pork and pigskin products (such as handbags, wallets and shoes), narcotics and associated plants and seeds, pornographic and subversive materials, are, among other items, prohibited. To protect local industry, items such as vehicles over 5 years old and goods manufactured locally are prohibited. Items injurious to health, such as air-guns, asbestos and cyclamates, are banned import from Israel and Iraq are banned absolutely.
All imports, as well as locally made items, must comply with Kuwaiti standard specifications (GCC), a set of common standards being devised under the GCC’s Unified Economic Agreement, apply, and if there is no suitable GCC, the product must adhere to international standards.

With the growth in the number of plants being built and the increasing cost competitiveness, 2011 looks like solar energy could start to come into its own in the U.S.

Even with the entrance of a Republican-controlled Congress, some see a reasonably bright future for solar in the U.S., as many of the subsidies are "baked in" to existing programs, many of which are at the state level, says Joel Silver man of Arete Research Services. State-level programs are less vulnerable to changes in Congress.

The big swing factor, he says, isn't going to be direct subsidies to the industry as much as the growth rates of installations. In Germany, he says, the growth of photovoltaic installed capacity was far more than anyone expected - and more than policymakers really wanted. "There could be a crippling oversupply there," he said.

But even with the dangers of a small-scale asset bubble, there are a number of companies that have shown they can do well. He cites that First Solar as one that built a business model that kept costs down, as it sells to solar project developers. Now if we will not work on this lines then the day may come when this world will again go into the stone age.

In its earnings forecast, the company said it expects 2011 sales ranging from $3.7 billion to $3.9 billion and earnings of $8.75 to $9.50 a share. First Solar also agreed to sell a 290-megawatt solar farm it plans to build in Arizona to NRG Energy Inc.

Adam Krop, analyst at Ardour Capital Investments, says that in 2010 there was 900 megawatts of installed solar power capacity - largely photovoltaics - in the U.S. he estimates that will double in 2011. It's still a small part of the total power market - renewables of any kind were only 4.2 percent of the generation capacity, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and solar would account for less than that. Even with the small capacity, though, the growth is healthy, Krop says, and that bodes well for solar's longer-term future.

According to data from the Solar Electric Power Association, an industry group, of the top 25 solar photovoltaic projects, 13 were completed in 2010. That includes the largest currently running plant to date, the Copper Mountain Solar Facility in Colorado. That adds up to 141.6 megawatts. In 2009, only four of the top 25 were completed.

There are currently seven solar plants that will be in the hundreds of megawatts planned in the United States. The 200-megawatt California Valley Solar Ranch (CVSR), which will sell power to Pacific Gas & Electric, is the only one that is planned for completion in 2011. But there are several smaller projects in the under-100 megawatt range that should start generating power by the beginning of 2012. As everybody is aware of this power crises but only few countries are seriously working on this alternate source of energy.

Solar Energy and Jobs

It eliminates 800 jobs in Massachusetts and shut its new factory at the former military base in Devens, just two years after it opened the massive facility to great fanfare and with about $58 million in taxpayer survey.

The company announced yesterday that it will close the plant by the end of March, calling itself a victim of weak demand and competition from cheaper suppliers in China, where the government provides solar companies with generous subsidies.

Evergreen itself has a factory in Wuhan, China, built in collaboration with a Chinese company, Jiawei Solarchina Co. Ltd., and with money from a Chinese government investment fund. The company had previously said it would shift some production from Devens to the Wuhan plant but yesterday was the first time it said Devens would be closed.

“This is a grueling decision for any management team to make,’’ said Evergreen spokesman Michael W. McCarthy, who added that company officials struggled over the fate of the Devens plant “for a particularly long time.’’

The Devens closing is a major hit to Governor Deval Patrick’s efforts to make Massachusetts a hub of the emerging clean-energy industry. The administration persuaded Evergreen to build at Devens with a package of grants, land, loans, and other aid originally valued at $76 million. The company ended up taking about $58 million, one of the largest aid packages Massachusetts has provided to a private company, and the governor was the featured guest at Evergreen’s ribbon-cutting in July 2008.

“We are disappointed to learn about Evergreen Solar’s decision,’’ Greg Bialecki, Patrick’s secretary for housing and economic development, said in a written statement. “The company has worked hard to compete against heavily subsidized foreign competition and to live up to its commitments to the Commonwealth.’’

In the 2010 gubernatorial campaign, Patrick was heavily criticized by his rivals for providing so much public aid to a company during tight fiscal times. One mark of the sensitivity of the issue: Evergreen yesterday requested that the State Police provide four troopers for security at the Devens plant until it closes, two Massachusetts officials said.

The plant closing is also likely to revive the debate over the use of state funds to help private companies under economic development programs.

“I really hope the Legislature and the governor take a hard look at these tax-break strategies for big corporations,’’ said state Senator James B. Eldridge, a Democrat from Acton whose district includes Devens. Eldridge has pushed to give the state more authority to recover public funds from companies that fail to deliver jobs and live up to commitments they make. It is the time of change to solar because this is the time of energy crises.

As in the previous article you read about women as leader , now read more about them.The new studies offer some clues about why the cultural mismatch between women and large companies persists and why it's so critical to keep women on board. What makes the new research more compelling than other such data is that it is based on results culled from executives' actual performance evaluations rather than on opinion surveys or experiments that simulate business situations.

Sometimes it may be difficult to have an idea .Because the participants had no idea that their evaluations would end up as part of a study on gender, the data are untainted, says Janet Irwin, a California management consultant who conducted one of the studies. ''We were startled by the results,'' she says.

Irwin and her colleagues discovered that women ranked higher than men on 28 of 31 measures. Irwin was stunned by women's consistently high ratings and how the scores defied conventional wisdom. Contrary to stereotypes, women outperformed men in all kinds of intellectual areas, such as producing high-quality work, recognizing trends, and generating new ideas and acting on them. ''Women's strengths are stronger than men's,'' says Irwin, ''and their weaknesses are not as pronounced.''

Several other studies showed similar patterns. Personnel Decisions International, a consulting firm in Minneapolis, looked at a huge sample--58,000 managers--and found that women outranked men in 20 of 23 areas. Larry Pfaff, a Michigan management consultant, examined evaluations from 2,482 executives from a variety of companies and found that women outperformed men on 17 of 20 measures.

Some of the researchers draw different conclusions, though, arguing that the research shows that women executives are equally effective as their male counterparts but not necessarily superior. While women score better, and the scores are statistically significant, says Susan Gebelein, executive vice-president of Personnel Decisions, those differences don't mean much in the real world. Why? Because the consulting firm has tested so many thousands of people, which can make minor differences appear more important than they really are. Women have always outscored men in such evaluations, says Gebelein, whose company began looking at gender differences in 1984. And they score highest at the most male-dominated companies because, she surmises, of the type of woman who succeeds in such environments--someone who must be superior in every way.

Robert Kabacoff, a vice-president at Management Research Group in Portland, Me., also wondered if women were getting higher test scores in these studies for reasons other than gender. They might have rated higher because they weren't being compared with men holding similar jobs, he suggests. Managers of human-resources departments often get rated higher on people skills than other supervisors, for instance. If the majority of female managers in a study work in human resources, vs. only a minority of males, the results may have more to do with job than gender.

MISUNDERSTOOD. To eliminate such potential distortions, Kabacoff conducted a differently designed study in 1998. He compared male and female managers who worked at the same companies, held similar jobs, were at the same management level, and had the same amount of supervisory experience. When he examined 1,800 supervisors in 22 management skills, he found that women outranked men on about half of the measures. Female managers were graded more effective by peers and subordinates, but bosses still judged men and women equally competent as leaders. ''Men and women seem to be doing roughly equally effective jobs, but they approach their jobs differently,'' says Kabacoff.

Certainly, many women managers are keenly aware that they inhabit a different reality at the office than men. Nancy Hawthorne, former chief financial officer at Continental Cablevision Inc., who is now a consultant, says she often felt her bosses ''wondered what the heck I was doing.'' At meetings, she often allowed subordinates to explain the details of ongoing projects. She felt her role was to delegate tasks to people around her to help them be more effective. ''I was being traffic cop and coach and facilitator,'' she said. ''I was always into building a department that hummed.''

And sometimes, women say, they were badgered about using the very skills the research found so valuable. Sandra Kiely, managing director and chief administrative officer at National City Investment Management Co. in Cleveland, recalls that one of her bosses at National City Bank warned that her management style would hurt her career. ''You should be looking out for yourself, not your people,'' he advised her.

Everyone knows that women have long excelled at teamwork, but getting results was one of the categories in which women earned their highest marks in these studies. Jackie Streeter, Apple Computer Inc.'s ( AAPL) vice-president for engineering, says she has repeatedly volunteered to shift dozens of employees out of her division because she felt they would better fit into a different department--a move that she says ''startled'' her male colleagues. ''It's not the size of your organization that counts but the size of the results you get,'' says Streeter, who has 350 people working for her.

In past it was very difficult to imagine that a women can also work like men. But today there are many fields in which women are working side by side.Twenty-five years after women first started pouring into the labor force--and trying to be more like men in every way, from wearing power suits to picking up golf clubs--new research is showing that men ought to be the ones doing more of the imitating. In fact, after years of analyzing what makes leaders most effective and figuring out who's got the Right Stuff, management gurus now know how to boost the odds of getting a great executive: Hire a female.

That's the essential finding of a growing number of comprehensive management studies conducted by consultants across the country for companies ranging from high-tech to manufacturing to consumer services. By and large, the studies show that women executives, when rated by their peers, underlings, and bosses, score higher than their male counterparts on a wide variety of measures--from producing high-quality work to goal-setting to mentoring employees. Using elaborate performance evaluations of execs, researchers found that women got higher ratings than men on almost every skill measured. Ironically, the researchers weren't looking to ferret out gender differences. They accidentally stumbled on the findings when they were compiling hundreds of routine performance evaluations and then analyzing the results.

The gender differences were often small, and men sometimes earned higher marks in some critical areas, such as strategic ability and technical analysis. But overall, female executives were judged more effective than their male counterparts. ''Women are scoring higher on almost everything we look at,'' says Shirley Ross, an industrial psychologist who helped oversee a study performed by Hagberg Consulting Group in Foster City, Calif. Hagberg conducts in-depth performance evaluations of senior managers for its diverse clients, including technology, health care, financial-service, and consumer-goods companies. Of the 425 high-level executives evaluated, each by about 25 people, women execs won higher ratings on 42 of the 52 skills measured.
The growing body of new research comes at a time when talent-hungry recruiters are scrambling to find execs who can retain workers and who can excel in the smaller bureaucracies of New Economy companies. Women think through decisions better than men, are more collaborative, and seek less personal glory, says the head of IBM's Global Services Div., Douglas Elix, who hired two managers within this year--both women. Instead of being motivated by self-interest, women are more driven by ''what they can do for the company,'' Elix says. Adds Harvard Business School Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author of the 20-year-old management classic, Men and Women of the Corporation: ''Women get high ratings on exactly those skills needed to succeed in the global Information Age, where teamwork and partnering are so important.''

It's no surprise, then, that some executives say they're beginning to develop a new hiring bias. If forced to choose between equally qualified male and female candidates for a top-level job, they say they often pick the woman--not because of affirmative action or any particular desire to give the female a chance but because they believe she will do a better job. ''I would rather hire a woman,'' says Anu Shukla, who sold her Internet marketing-software company Rubric Inc. earlier this year for $390 million. ''I know I'm going to get a certain quality of work, I know I'm going to get a certain dedication,'' she says, quickly adding that she's fully aware that not all women execs excel. Similarly, Brent Clark, CEO of Grand Rapids-based Pell Inc., the nation's largest foot-care chain, says he would choose a woman over a man, too. Women are more stable, he says, less turf-conscious, and better at ''all sorts of intangibles that can help an organization.''

But if women are so great, why aren't more of them running the big companies? Thousands of talented women now graduate from business schools and hold substantive middle-management jobs at major corporations--45% of all managerial posts are held by females, according to the Labor Dept. Yet only two of the nation's 500 biggest companies have female CEOs: Hewlett-Packard Co.'s ( HWP) Carly Fiorina and Avon Products' ( AVP) Andrea Jung. And of the 1,000 largest corporations, only six are run by women.

UNREWARDED. For one thing, there's still a pipeline problem: Most women get stuck in jobs that involve human resources or public relations--posts that rarely lead to the top. At the same time, female managers' strengths have long been undervalued, and their contributions in the workplace have gone largely unnoticed and unrewarded. Companies are now saying they want the skills women typically bring to the job, but such rhetoric doesn't always translate into reality. Some businesses view women only as workhorses, well-suited for demanding careers in middle management but not for prime jobs. These undercurrents of bias in Corporate America infuriate many women, who then bail out rather than navigate unsupportive terrain. ''They're doing the work, but they don't make it to the top,'' says Lyn Andrews, president of WebMD Health, a consumer unit of WebMD Corp. ( HLTH) in New York. Many start their own companies, while others seek a different work/family balance than many corporations offer. There are now more than 9 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., double the number 12 years ago. In future it may be very large.

Your life is not a bed of roses. At some point in our lives we have all been coached through something for example in an athletic event, the birth of a child, coping with the loss of a loved one, shaving for the first time, or learning how to type.

All of these activities require some form of coaching. Whether it is athletically based or teaching a life lesson, instructors are essential to life. After all, that is what sport and life consist of--setting goals and achieving them.

During conversations with business professionals and professors, I learned that there were five areas that, with incorporation, could efficiently improve employee output. These areas were Teamwork, Communication, Creativity, Time Management, and Leadership. Each was as important as the others and all were dependent on one another. In today's growing global economy, we could very well be coaching our current and future employees to adapt to their changing environment and so better serve the goal(s) of their company.

Teamwork is becoming a lost concept in today's capitalistic approach to accomplishing goals. Human nature compels us to take care of ourselves primarily and make sure that we survive , a characteristic that has crept into the business approach to success.

This natural desire combined with the preference of many professionals to work independently eliminates group discussion, the introduction of multiple opinions, and ultimately prevent the best solution from being utilized.

With the help of team work one can achieve even harder goal.

One person cannot efficiently perform a task without some direction. Coaches are trained to get people to cooperate and to evaluate individual strengths and assign group tasks in order to accomplish the team goal.

Coaches will also put each person in the role that will best prepare him to make the goal achievable. The best teams will be those whose players will do anything for the teammates beside them on game day.

If their biggest fear is letting their teammates down, the coach can consider himself successful. The players have learned the value of teamwork. This concept will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

TEAMWORK:

How can we teach this? In my four years of collegiate experience, I structured the activities outside of football, such as obstacle courses, team bowling, community service, etc., where the players must use all their skills to accomplish a common goal and communicate the best ways to foster togetherness.

These activities enable the players to interact with one another off the field and take care of each other on game day. Management can use the same techniques with their employees. Make the employees see that they are all part of the same family.

Communication accompanies the concept of teamwork. Without it, there is no teamwork, and in order for a business to build it, it must coach its employees to communicate with one another, even use hand signals to communicate everyone's responsibility.

For instance, a quarterback may tap his helmet to let the wide receiver know that he is going to throw him the ball. In response, the wide receiver may tap his helmet to let the quarterback understand what he is supposed to do.

The point is that both players are communicating despite the obstacles and the coach is facilitating the communication.

Co-workers have to overcome obstacles such as distance, difference in personal or business background, language barriers, etc, so they can accomplish the goal of the company.

Sometimes people think that it is impossible to do this task , but one if determined , he can achieve his target.

Coaches are using hand signals to help their teams overcome the screaming crowds by the communication of basic information. The smallest changes in a routine or creative effort are often accepted as a miracle.

For example, Bob Stoops, the football coach at Oklahoma, allows his offensive and defensive linemen to go out for passes or field kicks. He also organizes touch football games in which everyone is allowed to run, throw, or catch the ball.

This may not seem like a novel concept, but when offensive or defensive linemen are allowed to experience these aspects of the game it involves them more in the total team goal.

Stoops is using a creative and constructive (fun) way to condition his players and break up the monotony of the long season.

Business coaches can use this same type of creativity by planning softball leagues, picnics, cooking classes, or encouraging employees to express their ideas on company management. Anyone who wants to learn how to run his business more efficiently can call upon those who are involved in the day-to-day operation of the company.

Like Coach Stoops, we are trying to rejuvenate the attitudes of company employees. Our aim is to convey work as not just a place to collect a paycheck, but as an area in which employees can come to express their creativity, share ideas with one another, and build a bond that will carry over after work is finished.

By 2030, those two countries will be responsible for two-thirds of the world's carbon gas emissions, which are the primary human activity causing global warming.

India and China have argued against enforcing strict emission controls in their countries, on the grounds that these could hinder their economic growth and prompt a global economic slowdown. But the new IEA report says working with China and India on alternative energy sources and curbing emissions is a matter of global urgency.

The bad news is not only environmental. As the world scrambles to boost energy supplies over the next two decades, an ever-greater percentage of its supplies of oil and gas will come from a dwindling number of countries, largely arrayed around the Persian Gulf, as the massive North Sea and Gulf of Mexico deposits are finally exhausted. That will leave the industrialized countries far more dependent on the volatile Middle East in 2030 than they are today, and the likes of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran will dictate terms to companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron, which increasingly operate as contractors to state-run oil companies in many producer nations.

Williams made his comments after the EPA suggested that gas operations by Range Resources contaminated two water wells in southwest Parker County, Tex., where gas was found in the water. Range Resources issued a Dec. 8 news release saying research indicates its operations did not cause any methane in the water wells.

For months, Range Resources worked with the RRC and others on extensive testing of both its gas wells and the water wells of concern.

Cabot Oil and Gas said in an Oct. 19 release that it has proof that methane gas has been present in water wells around the Dimock Township, Pa., area for generations. Four Dimock-area water wells have methane levels in the water that exceeds levels suggested by the US Department of the Interior.

“We do not believe that our operations caused the Dimock water-quality issues,” a Cabot spokesman said.

All of this is causing oil and gas companies to consider testing the water before they drill.

Thin-film solar cell manufacturers begin building their solar cells by depositing several layers of a light-absorbing material, a semiconductor onto a substrate -- coated glass, metal or plastic. The materials used as semiconductors don't have to be thick because they absorb energy from the sun very efficiently. As a result, thin-film solar cells are lightweight, durable and easy to use.

There are three main types of thin-film solar cells, depending on the type of semiconductor used: amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium deselenide (CIGS). Amorphous silicon is basically a trimmed-down version of the traditional silicon-wafer cell. As such, a-Si is well understood and is commonly used in solar-powered electronics. It does, however, have some drawbacks.

One of the biggest problems with a-Si solar cells is the material used for its semiconductor. Silicon is not always easy to find on the market, where demand often exceeds supply. But the a-Si cells themselves are not particularly efficient. They suffer significant degradation in power output when they're exposed to the sun. Thinner a-Si cells overcome this problem, but thinner layers also absorb sunlight less efficiently. Taken together, these qualities make a-Si cells great for smaller-scale applications, such as calculators, but less than ideal for larger-scale applications, such as solar-powered buildings.

Promising advances in non-silicon thin-film PV technologies are beginning to overcome the issues associated with amorphous silicon.

Structure of Thin-film Solar Cells

Because structure and function are so closely linked with solar cells, let's take a moment to review how they work. The basic science behind thin-film solar cells is the same as traditional silicon-wafer cells.

Photovoltaic cells rely on substances known as semiconductors. Semiconductors are insulators in their pure form, but are able to conduct electricity when heated or combined with other materials. A semiconductor mixed, or "doped," with phosphorous develops an excess of free electrons. This is known as an n-type semiconductor. A semiconductor doped with other materials, such as boron, develops an excess of "holes," spaces that accept electrons. This is known as a p-type semiconductor.

A PV cell joins n-type and p-type materials, with a layer in between known as a junction. Even in the absence of light, a small number of electrons move across the junction from the n-type to the p-type semiconductor, producing a small voltage. In the presence of light, photons dislodge a large number of electrons, which flow across the junction to create a current. This current can be used to power electrical devices, from light bulbs to cell phone chargers.

Traditional solar cells use silicon in the n-type and p-type layers. The newest generation of thin-film solar cells uses thin layers of either cadmium telluride (CdTe) or copper indium gallium deselenide (CIGS) instead. One company, Nanosolar, based in San Jose, Calif., has developed a way to make the CIGS material as an ink containing nanoparticles. A nanoparticle is a particle with at least one dimension less than 100 nanometers (one-billionth of a meter, or 1/1,000,000,000 m). Existing as nanoparticles, the four elements self-assemble in a uniform distribution, ensuring that the atomic ratio of the elements is always correct.

The layers that make up the two non-silicon thin film solar cells are shown below. Notice that there are two basic configurations of the CIGS solar cell. The CIGS-on-glass cell requires a layer of molybdenum to create an effective electrode. This extra layer isn't necessary in the CIGS-on-foil cell because the metal foil acts as the electrode. A layer of zinc oxide (ZnO) plays the role of the other electrode in the CIGS cell. Sandwiched in between are two more layers -- the semiconductor material and cadmium sulfide (CdS). These two layers act as the n-type and p-type materials, which are necessary to create a current of electrons.

You have probably also been hearing about the "solar revolution" for the last 20 years -- the idea that one day we will all use free electricity from the sun. This is a seductive promise: On a bright, sunny day, the sun shines approximately 1,000 watts of energy per square meter of the planet's surface, and if we could collect all of that energy we could easily power our homes and offices for free.

Converting Photons to Electrons

The solar cells that you see on calculators and satellites are photovoltaic cells or modules (modules are simply a group of cells electrically connected and packaged in one frame). Photovoltaics, as the word implies (photo = light, voltaic = electricity), convert sunlight directly into electricity. Once used almost exclusively in space, photovoltaics are used more and more in less exotic ways. They could even power your house. How do these devices work?

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently the most commonly used. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. PV cells also all have one or more electric fields that act to force electrons freed by light absorption to flow in a certain direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the PV cell, we can draw that current off to use externally. For example, the current can power a calculator. This current, together with the cell's voltage (which is a result of its built-in electric field or fields), defines the power (or wattage) that the solar cell can produce.

That's the basic process, but there's really much more to it. Let's take a deeper look into one example of a PV cell: the single crystal silicon cell.

Silicon

Silicon has some special chemical properties, especially in its crystalline form. An atom of silicon has 14 electrons, arranged in three different shells. The first two shells, those closest to the center, are completely full. The outer shell, however, is only half full, having only four electrons. A silicon atom will always look for ways to fill up its last shell (which would like to have eight electrons). To do this, it will share electrons with four of its neighbor silicon atoms. It's like every atom holds hands with its neighbors, except that in this case, each atom has four hands joined to four neighbors. That's what forms the crystalline structure, and that structure turns out to be important to this type of PV cell.

We've now described pure, crystalline silicon. Pure silicon is a poor conductor of electricity because none of its electrons are free to move about, as electrons are in good conductors such as copper. Instead, the electrons are all locked in the crystalline structure. The silicon in a solar cell is modified slightly so that it will work as a solar cell.

Silicon in Solar Cells

A solar cell has silicon with impurities -- other atoms mixed in with the silicon atoms, changing the way things work a bit. We usually think of impurities as something undesirable, but in our case, our cell wouldn't work without them. These impurities are actually put there on purpose. Consider silicon with an atom of phosphorous here and there, maybe one for every million silicon atoms. Phosphorous has five electrons in its outer shell, not four. It still bonds with its silicon neighbor atoms, but in a sense, the phosphorous has one electron that doesn't have anyone to hold hands with. It doesn't form part of a bond, but there is a positive proton in the phosphorous nucleus holding it in place.

When energy is added to pure silicon, for example in the form of heat, it can cause a few electrons to break free of their bonds and leave their atoms. A hole is left behind in each case. These electrons then wander randomly around the crystalline lattice looking for another hole to fall into. These electrons are called free carriers, and can carry electrical current. There are so few of them in pure silicon, however, that they aren't very useful. Our impure silicon with phosphorous atoms mixed in is a different story. It turns out that it takes a lot less energy to knock loose one of our "extra" phosphorous electrons because they aren't tied up in a bond -- their neighbors aren't holding them back. As a result, most of these electrons do break free, and we have a lot more free carriers than we would have in pure silicon. The process of adding impurities on purpose is called doping, and when doped with phosphorous, the resulting silicon is called N-type ("n" for negative) because of the prevalence of free electrons. N-type doped silicon is a much better conductor than pure silicon is.

Actually, only part of our solar cell is N-type. The other part is doped with boron, which has only three electrons in its outer shell instead of four, to become P-type silicon. Instead of having free electrons, P-type silicon ("p" for positive) has free holes. Holes really are just the absence of electrons, so they carry the opposite (positive) charge. They move around just like electrons do.

So where has all this gotten us?

N-type Plus P-type Silicon

The interesting part starts when you put N-type silicon together with P-type silicon. Remember that every PV cell has at least one electric field. Without an electric field, the cell wouldn't work, and this field forms when the N-type and P-type silicon are in contact. Suddenly, the free electrons in the N side, which have been looking all over for holes to fall into, see all the free holes on the P side, and there's a mad rush to fill them in.

Before now, our silicon was all electrically neutral. Our extra electrons were balanced out by the extra protons in the phosphorous. Our missing electrons (holes) were balanced out by the missing protons in the boron. When the holes and electrons mix at the junction between N-type and P-type silicon, however, that neutrality is disrupted. Do all the free electrons fill all the free holes? No. If they did, then the whole arrangement wouldn't be very useful. Right at the junction, however, they do mix and form a barrier, making it harder and harder for electrons on the N side to cross to the P side. Eventually, equilibrium is reached, and we have an electric field separating the two sides

There are many situations which may adversely effect the business of certain countries. Iran is finding it increasingly difficult to access the financial services it needs to run its economy and may lose up to $60 billion in energy investments due to global sanctions, US officials said Wednesday.

The officials told US lawmakers that United Nations-backed sanctions imposed over the summer are inflicting economic pain on Tehran and hampering its drive to develop nuclear weapons.

“With great regularity, major companies are announcing that they have curtailed or completely pulled out of business dealings with Iran,” Stuart Levey, US Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, told the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs. There are some more conditions.

“And, as has been widely reported, Iran’s leadership appears to have underestimated the severity and effects of the global financial measures, giving rise to internal Iranian criticism and finger-pointing,” Levey added.

Levey said the sanctions were restricting Iran’s access to dollars and were the likely cause of a nearly 20 percent plunge in Iran’s rial currency in September, prompting weeks of intervention from Iran’s central bank to stabilize it.

A UN Security Council resolution calling for increased sanctions to curb Iran’s nuclear and missile activities paved the way for tougher US and European Union measures to cut off financial services and energy sector investment from Iran.

Undersecretary of State William Burns told the panel Iran may lose $50 billion to $60 billion in potential energy investments, along with critical technology and know-how from major international companies.

“Sanctions have hindered Iran’s development of a nuclear weapons capability and the means to deliver them, while making it harder for Iran to continue its destabilizing activities in the region,” he added in prepared remarks.

Seventeen Iranian banks are now blacklisted by most major financial centers and the United States has passed a law that effectively forces international financial institutions to choose between doing business with Iran or the US.

A few years ago, Iran was able to deal with the world’s largest and most prestigious banks, Levey said, but now it is “relegated to the margins of the international financial system, and is finding it increasingly difficult to access the large-scale, sophisticated financial services necessary to run a modern economy efficiently.”

A report issued by the International Electromagnetic Field Collaborative and endorsed by 43 scientists from 13 countries has reviewed the evidence linking cell phone use to brain tumors, and refuting the methodology of a forthcoming industry-funded study expected to give the phones a clean bill of health.

"I fear we will see a tsunami of brain tumors, although it is too early to see that now since the tumors have a 30-year latency," study author Lloyd Morgan said. "I pray I'm wrong, but brace yourself."

Among the research cited in the study was a recent study by a Swedish team of scientists that found a 420 percent higher risk of brain cancer among people who had started using cellular or cordless phones as teenagers. Older analog phones, which are now mostly off the market, had been found to increase cancer risk by 700 percent.

Because children are especially vulnerable to radiation, the report recommends that parents not allow their children under the age of 18 to use mobile phones except in emergencies, or to sleep with cellular phones under their pillows. It recommends using corded land lines whenever possible, and using cellular phones mostly as answering machines, turning them on only to check messages and return calls. Use of cell phones inside buildings or in cars increases cancer risk, as it increases the radiation a phone must emit to function. Use of text messages and non-wireless headsets can reduce cancer risk. The report also advises against carrying cell phones against the body, even in pockets.

"Some countries are already banning cell phones over health concerns, with France saying children in elementary schools can only use them for texting," Morgan said.

The report also sets out 11 flaws in the forthcoming Interphone study, a study on cell phones and health being prepared by the wireless industry in 13 different countries. These flaws include the exclusion of non-cellular cordless phones (which also emit radiation), children and young adults (the most vulnerable demographics) from the study, the exclusion of certain types of tumors, and the exclusion of participants who died or were too sick to answer questions.

What is the first step you should take when looking into solar?

Your first objective when considering solar alternatives is to understand how much electricity you use, what you are using it for and when you are using it.

You receive a credit for the electricity that you feed to the grid. A solar electric system that is tied to the electrical grid feeds electricity into the grid when the system generates more electricity than you use. . Is my home a good place for a solar electric system?

Shading, roof orientation, the amount of space on a roof and the quality of the roof are all factors which need to be considered.

You want to install a solar electric system in a location which is free from shading. Shading is a significant factor. Simply put, photovoltaics (PV) work by converting light energy into electrical energy. The PV cells consist of a positive and a negative slice of silicon placed under a thin slice of glass. What does installation entail?

The installation process is fairly straightforward. The equipment used varies by roof type and installation company but the universal components are the panels, a support structure for the panels, an inverter, electrical pipe called conduit, and AC/DC disconnect switches. LONDON: The European single currency hit a near 7-month dollar high on Friday on expectations of more US stimulus spending, in turn pushing gold to a fresh record, dealers said.

At about 09:35 GMT, the euro struck $1.3764, the highest level since March 17 and compared with $1.3634 in New York late Thursday. The faltering dollar pushed gold to a record $1,317.42 per ounce on the London Bullion Market.

“The economic data out of Europe has been fairly uninspiring this morning and the sovereign debt issues are still bubbling away,” said GFT analyst David Morrison.

“Consequently, it’s probably fair to say that it’s the expectation of further quantitative easing [QE] from the US Federal Reserve that continues to undermine the dollar and lift the single currency.” The dollar has faced strong selling pressure since the US central bank hinted last month at more stimulus spending if the tepid US economic recovery cools further.

Morrison noted that “QE involves the creation of new dollars by the Federal Reserve, which are introduced into the system through the purchase of Treasuries [bonds], mortgage-backed securities and perhaps other assets.

“By creating these fresh dollars, the Fed dilutes the purchasing power of the existing dollars, devaluing the currency.”

"When you have a chance to have your ideas heard and one of them actually gets implemented, it's such a boost."

ii) Goals. To instill a sense of purpose in your employees, be sure to lay out a clearly-defined set of goals for them on a regular basis. At Meddius, Gunther's team of managers re-aligns each department's goals every three months. "The goals have to be very measurable, obtainable goals," Gunther says. For the sales team, for example, that might mean setting a goal as to the number of deals the team is expected to close in a certain period of time for a certain dollar amount. Once goals are in place, it is up to each team to decide how to achieve them.

"People are so busy and harried themselves that all they do is work, they don't really manage," Hiam says. v) Flexibility. In addition to deciding how they work, the experts say employees also appreciate having a say over when they work. Gunther has, of course, set up a radically flexible schedule for his employees that might not work for every office. But, he says, it has enabled him to find and retain top talent for Meddius. "We've had people who have taken significant pay cuts to work for us, because at their old job they were told to show up and be at the office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.," he says. "Generation Y is looking for a synergy between their personal lives and their professional lives." Set up a flexible vacation policy or a telecommuting policy that enables employees to work from home. It involves a great deal of trust, but, as Pink says, "If you don't trust your employees, you've got much bigger problems."

vi) Attention. Just because you're giving employees the control they crave doesn't mean they don't want guidance and feedback. Hiam suggests checking in with them every few weeks, even if it's just for a minute or two. "Look them in the eye and ask how things are going. Find out what's really going on in their world," he suggests. "Responsibility is about giving them a chance to make a difference, but attention is the human dimension of managing." And don't be fooled into thinking that the traditional annual performance review is your big chance to tell your employees what's working and what's not. In Pink's words, "There's no way to get better at something you only hear about once a year." That's why, at Meddius, Gunther uses the year-end to make decisions about promoting employees, and uses the quarterly meetings where goals are set, to address big operational issues within each department.

vii) Opportunities for Innovation. Not long ago, Google announced its 20 percent creative time policy, which encourages employees to work on any innovative ideas they have that are company-related during 20 percent of their hours at work. Both Hiam and Pink applaud this concept. "People need to be given a chance to bring about something new and exciting," Hiam says. "Just asking people for ideas doesn't create innovation. It's a culmination of creativity and leadership." Though you might not be able to give your employees this much time on the clock to work on side projects, you can always foster innovation through employee brainstorming sessions that allow the staff to work with new people and generate fresh ideas.

viii) Open-mindedness. When your employees come to you with their ideas, you need to treat them with equal parts sensitivity and honesty. Be sensitive because, according to Hiam, the more an employee gets shot down by an authority figure, the less likely he or she will be to make suggestions in the future. It's also important to be honest because, as that authority figure, you may know what's best for your business and what's not. You don't have to accept every idea that comes your way, but, Hiam says, "Don't just shut someone down. Say, 'Here's what I know: years ago we tried something similar. Here's what happened. Give some more thought to your idea, and come back if you think you can make it work.'

ix) Transparency. When Meddius publishes each department's quarterly goals, Gunther does it as well, not because he needs reminding, but because he believes his employees should be cognizant of where the organization's going. "Employees, especially the younger work force, want transparency," he says. While it's not necessary to publish that information, Hiam emphasizes that the communication channel between a manager and his or her employees should always be open. "That's why you need to build it by talking about ordinary everyday things," he says. "You need to have rehearsed talking about ordinary things before you can talk about anything major."

x) Compensation. Your employees do need to provide for themselves and their families, so, of course, salaries, bonuses and benefits are important, but perhaps not in the way you might think. Pink's research on what motivates employees has led him to one conclusion: "The best use of money as a motivator is to pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table." He says it's better to pay people a little more than the norm and allow them to focus on their work than to pay them based on performance. "Don't pay people a measly base salary and very high commissions and bonuses in hopes that the fear of not having enough food on their tables will inspire them to do extraordinary things." A-Power's U.S. move showed how well it understood the U.S. Initially, it just planned to build a 1.1. gigawatt wind farm and export turbines. Then U.S. senators complained about jobs going overseas, so the company decided to build a turbine factory in Harry Reid's home state. The complaining stopped. Suntech and other Chinese module makers also have plans to construct U.S. manufacturing facilities. As a result, Chinese companies have in a short time become a significant driver of new factory jobs for Americans. J.D. Power & Associates expects sales for the entire Chinese market, including nonluxury brands, roughly to double in less than a decade, from about 8 million in 2007 to 16.1 million in 2014. Power forecasts luxury auto sales in China will more than double by 2014, to around 508,000. Demand for luxury cars is also growing in India, but from a much lower base, Power said. The company estimated combined sales for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and a handful of other luxury brands in India were 3,598 in 2007, almost double 2006. (Like BusinessWeek, J.D. Power is a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies.)

In contrast, total luxury-brand sales in China were about 205,000 units in 2007, up 29% from 2006, according to the research and consulting firm based in Westlake Village, Calif.

Those factors gave Audi a dominating share of nearly 50% of luxury-brand sales in China in 2007, according to Power, but the competition is heating up. The exploration was based on oil stains found. But the well turned out to be a dry hole with no oil. Little wonder then that oil drilling is risky and expensive.

According to Arizona Geological Survey, Oil drilling in Arizona costs between $400,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the depth of the hole and its location. A rig capable of drilling most exploratory holes typically costs $8,000-15,000 per day. Well then, why is drilling for oil so expensive?There may be some more reasons but the following are more involved in this regard :

Payments for the contractors, welders, engineers, supervisors, mud loggers, geologists, scientists
Personnel for drilling, logging, cementing, casing and other logistics
Clearing all the dues with the landowner (territorial payments if offshore), payment of taxes, fee for attorney, permit to drill the well
Costs for maintenance: There will be three shifts with personnel employed 24 hours a day, so amenities for the crew like motels, restaurants, transport, water and food.

Onto the process of drilling, how is the well drilled?
Well, the drilling rig bores a hole into the earth through which steel pipes are inserted. Pipes or casings like cement would then be put in between for strength as well as for separating different pressure zones- if they exist. The well is then drilled further, and more casings are added. At times, 2-3 layers of casings would be built depending on the geological composition of the zone. The rotator table then passes the drill string onto the hole. The drill string rotating by 'top drive' or 'power swivel' mechanism extends the drill bit. This extension is done with the help of the derrick (the structure holding the drill string). The drill bit then cuts the rock into pieces.

Drilling fluid, also called mud-mixture of fluids, chemicals, abrasives and solids - is then pumped down the drill string. This fluid clears the cut rock bits onto the surface. Compressed air is substituted for the fluid, at times. In turbo-drilling, a turbine is placed in the drill string. Mud flows through this turbine causing the drill bit to rotate.

We saw earlier that oil drilling is expensive, so are the drilling contractors because:

Discovery of new oil wells is very rare
Low yields from old/mature wells
High risks involved in the exploration process
Fluctuating price of oil and gas
Increased demand for oil as well as for drilling contractors

The drilling works are done by specialized drilling companies like Transocean, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc and Noble. In general, these drilling companies rent or lease their drilling rigs to oil and gas companies like ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch, BP and Shell. In return, they earn revenue through day rates.

Average well cost in the UK continental shelf in 1998-Northern North Sea £ 8-12 million, West of Shetland £ 5 - 15 million, Southern North Sea £ 7 - 12 million, Irish Sea £ 2 - 3 million. To get a more clear idea of the costs involved let's take a look at some of the drilling companies:

Transocean: This is the world's second largest offshore drilling contractor. Recently the company penned a contract for a well in West Africa for $630,000 a day and its Deepwater Pathfinder is the most expensive drill ship in the world. It also signed a three year contract from a consortium of contractors at $460,000 a day in the Q3 of 2009. Most of Transocean's drilling is occurring in the Far East, the U.K., Middle East, the U.S., as well as parts of Africa and Asia. Average day rate of Transocean has moved from $211,900 in 2007 to $283,800 in the third quarter of 2009.

Diamond offshore drilling, : Operating as offshore contract drilling, the company concentrates more on the Gulf of Mexico. It has about 45 rigs, 30 semi-submersibles (11 high- specification capable of working in water depths of more than 4000 ft, 19 intermediate rigs-work at depths less than 4,000 ft., 15 jack-ups- operates at water depths of up to 400 feet). The day rate was $386,000 in the fourth quarter of 2008 which increased to $360,000 per day in the first quarter of 2009. In the Q2 of 2009, the day rate was $381,000 for high specification floaters, $286,000 for intermediate semis and $146,000 for jack-ups.

Noble: It is the third largest offshore oil exploration and production company with presence in India, Mexico, Brazil, Middle East and West Africa. It has 63 drilling units (13 semi submersibles, 44 jack-ups and three submersibles). The day rate was $83,417 in 2006 and $164,000 in 2009 (by comparison average day-rates for Noble's international fleet was $60,922 in 2005 and $83,417 in 2006).

Ensco International: It has 45 jack-ups, one semi-submersible, one barge rig and three ultra deep water semi submersible rigs. Apart from the US, the company has presence in Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa and the Middle East. The day rate of the company rose to $155,000 in 2008, a dramatic increase from the rates of $114,762 in 2006 and $139,882 in 2007.

Seadrill: This Norway based company received contracts worth $4.1 billion for three deepwater rigs from Brazilian Petrobras - day rates was more than $600,000.

Though the oil prices have fallen in recent times, the companies still earn profit, in fact, their profit has surged- as seen from the above discussion-- as most of their contract run through 2010. Now we have to think seriously for the alternate sources of energies for our cars, factories, power etc. otherwise we may go back in the stone age again.

According to a White House release, Abengoa Solar will construct the first ever large-scale solar plant in Arizona with $1.45 billion in funding, creating over 1,600 construction jobs and clean energy for 70,000 homes. Abound Solar Manufacturing will develop a plant that manufactures solar panels in Colorado and another in Indiana with a sum of $400 million in funding, generating over 2,000 construction jobs, conserving energy for 200,000 homes, and producing more than 1,500 permanent jobs in manufacturing and technology industries.

There may be many reasons for it . That's one of the reasons why we're accelerating the transition to a clean energy economy and doubling our use of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power - steps that have the potential to create whole new industries and hundreds of thousands of new jobs in America," Obama said.

According to an Abengoa Solar release, the company is moving along with this agenda. I think now every country in the third world should also take practical steps .

Santiago Seage, CEO of Abengoa Solar, said the company can now start construction of its Arizona plant.

"What the project needs now is for Maricopa County and the state to continue their support and work expeditiously on the last remaining permits needed for construction to begin," Seage said in a release.

Kate Maracas, VP of Abengoa Solar, calculated that "the building of Solana will also create between 1,600-1,700 new construction jobs, and operation of the plant will add another 85 permanent jobs. These construction and operating jobs will create a few thousand additional indirect jobs. Taken together, 98% of the jobs created by Solana will be American jobs - primarily from Arizona, and a smaller portion from neighboring states."

Similarly, Abound Solar Manufacturing's news release notes the importance of the funding. It is the need of the time to fund this type of projects.

"The DOE loan guarantee program is essential to helping companies like Abound Solar scale-up innovations in photovoltaic manufacturing that are critical to reducing the cost of alternative energy," Tom Tiller, CEO of Abound Solar, said. "The proceeds of this loan will build on the momentum we have already established and confidently expand our operations."

Steve Abely, CFO of Abound Solar, asserted that "state and local representatives from both Colorado and Indiana were particularly instrumental in our efforts to secure the loan guarantee to create more high-paying jobs in America, and ensure that our nation will continue to be a global driver of renewable, affordable and abundant solar energy."

Andrea Buffa, spokesperson for the non-profit Apollo Alliance, while saying that "clean energy is really the best way to address both the jobs crisis that the U.S. faces and the environmental crisis that the world faces," thinks that the government could have done a better job.

"But these investments pale by comparison to the clean energy investments that are being made in places like China and the European Union, and if the U.S. doesn't make a long-term commitment to clean energy very soon - in the form of the Senate passing a clean energy and climate bill with strong manufacturing provisions - we're going to fall even further behind in the global clean energy race than we already have," Buffa said.

"The U.S. should put a cap and price on carbon emissions," Buffa said. "This will give businesses an incentive to switch to cleaner sources of energy and should lead to significant private investment in the clean energy sector. We should also adopt a national renewable energy standard and strong building and appliance energy efficiency standards, and we should move toward cleaner forms of transportation. Those policies will create the demand for clean energy products and services."

Today gold prices are increasing day by day. Fear of financial collapse has enhanced gold's glitter, with prices soaring more than 300 percent the past decade, including 30 percent just in the last 12 months. And just as strong U.S. real estate prices a few years ago created a burgeoning ecosystem of entrepreneurs exploiting that bubble, gold's surge has led to a new crop of prospectors seeking gold and the business around gold.

Let us see in the past .One is Mark Franklin. About four years ago, Franklin, 52, watched a television show on treasure hunting and decided to try his own luck at gold prospecting. The Dayton electronics technician had never prospected before, but he saw a future in the precious metal—a world awash in debt could trigger inflation and a robust outlook for gold, a so-called "hard" asset that typically rallies in times of economic distress. Gold is now about $1,209 an ounce, near the all-time high of $1,266 per ounce in June. Plus, Franklin says, the quest for gold was a good excuse to get outdoors. He discovers about $50 worth of gold, in flakes and larger pieces called "pickers," on an average day prospecting in Ohio or on longer trips to Idaho, Alaska, Michigan, and Georgia. His total take? Just more than $4,000.

Franklin is far from a lone prospector. "Every time the gold price goes up, our membership increases," says Jinny Iodice, customer service manager at the Gold Prospectors Association of America, a Temecula (Calif.) group that provides forums and outings for recreational miners. There have been plenty of new members: The association's membership jumped 93 percent in 2008, followed by a more modest increase of less than 10 percent so far this year, as the gold bug infects more recreational miners. The GPAA has more than 62,000 members nationwide.

Just as past gold booms produced incredible wealth for some, however, far more of those seeking to strike it rich went bust. "When you see such a dramatic move, the tail end almost becomes hysterical," says Gus Sauter, chief investment officer at Vanguard, comparing today's gold rush with the Internet boom of the late 1990s. "People who threw caution to the wind are still scrambling." In the past, gold has done well when U.S. Treasuries yielded less than the inflation rate, which is not the case right now, according to Paul Kasriel, chief economist at Northern Trust. But "markets are weird," he says. "Why did people keep buying houses when it was pretty clear house prices were going to fall?"

But "gold is real money," says Gerard Adams, president of the National Inflation Assn., a year-old group in Fort Lee, N.J., that seeks to warn about hyperinflation, which it considers inevitable. In Adams' view, the price of gold has not yet peaked.

Gold is also used for business activities. Many companies are banking on that. Three years ago, Terry Soloman decided to turn his lifelong passion for prospecting into a formal business with Arizona Gold Adventures in Congress, Ariz. Soloman gets two types of customers: families wanting an outdoor vacation and individuals serious about prospecting. With his children out of the house and the price of gold rising, Soloman turned the recreational prospecting trips he had taken for some two decades into a formal business. Now he has about 400 visitors a season. The average customer finds one to two grams, says Soloman, but some get even luckier. "You've got other people who walk away with several ounces," he said. "You've got to have a little luck."

Lucky or not, Soloman says everyone leaves with legitimate prospecting skills for his $349 daily fee. Those wanting more serious skills now make up about 40 percent of his business, double the number before gold surged, Soloman said.

It is the time of competition .General Motors has a lot of company. Practically every automaker on the planet is being forced to make cars and trucks that pollute less and go farther on a tank of fuel. Here is what GM and its main rivals have in the pipeline.

• GM (GM). The Chevrolet Volt is the sexiest green car in GM's arsenal. Due in November, 2010, the sedan will charge up in six hours and run for 40 miles before a small gasoline engine fires up and recharges the battery, extending the range to 600 miles. On such longer trips, GM says it will get 100 miles per gallon. Insiders say future generations may offer different battery sizes; smaller and cheaper ones for people who commute less than 40 miles and bigger ones for road-trippers. GM says the Volt will sell for $30,000 to $45,000. And the electric bill? GM says it will cost $150 to $300 a year to keep it charged, about one-sixth the cost to gas up today's cars. GM is also pushing harder into hybrids. An 80-mpg version of the Saturn Vue SUV arrives next year. It will be the first plug-in hybrid in the U.S.

• Toyota (TM). It already has the Prius and five other hybrids selling in the U.S. The company plans to lease a limited number of plug-in hybrids by 2010 and put its gasoline-electric hybrid system into more models. Its next-generation hybrid cars should be launched the same year. They will get better fuel economy and cost less.

• Honda (HMC). It's the contrarian. While Honda aims to launch another hybrid compact by 2010, it also has plans for clean diesel engines in anything larger than a Civic. It thinks clean diesel, which can boost fuel economy by more than 25%, is a more cost-effective solution than hybrids. Honda's conventional engines already beat most rivals when it comes to fuel economy.

• Nissan (NSANY). CEO Carlos Ghosn bought Toyota's hybrid system for the Altima family sedan. But in two years Nissan will replace it with one that's home-grown. Plus, in 2010, Nissan plans to start selling electric cars worldwide. They will use technology similar to GM's.

• Ford (F). GM's crosstown rival is pushing its Eco Boost engines, which generate plenty of power and better fuel economy. And by the end of the decade two more hybrids will join the Escape SUV in Ford's gasoline-electric lineup.

But the question on many drivers' minds these days is whether the current crop of cars is smart in the right way.

The problem: Brilliant engineers in Detroit, Toyota City, and Stuttgart have spent millions of man hours coming up with better ways to deploy a side air bag or hold a coffee cup. But what is becoming increasingly apparent is that they should also have been spending more time and money devising technology to improve fuel-efficiency in a car people actually want to buy.

At some point over the past few decades the auto industry found itself focusing more on the superficial aspects of cars. True, safety and reliability ratings have soared across the board for nearly every manufacturer, yet these were refinements, not radical adjustments. Auto designers have never lacked for bold ideas, but it has been the fault of management for failing to push harder in new directions and take risks. This short-term focus is responsible for landing automakers, especially the Detroit 3, in their current mess.

How big of a mess? In June, auto sales fell 18% across the board, with only a few smaller or more fuel-efficient cars such as Honda's (HMC) Fit and Accord showing a modest gain. Sales of trucks, SUVs, and luxury cars were all down—28.8%, 37.7%, and 21.6%, respectively—from the same month in 2007, according to Autodata.

Shifting Gears

Since the early days of the automobile, visionaries and crackpots alike have experimented with different ways to make a car go. Yet since the Stanley Steamer, there has been little serious competition to the internal combustion engine. That's because for the first 70 years or so of the automobile's existence, gasoline was so cheap no alternative was needed. But with the energy crisis of the 1970s, the long-term viability of gas-powered cars was first seriously called into question. However, instead of taking the hint and throwing themselves into developing serious alternative engine technology, for the most part the automakers did nothing.

Fortunately, that is finally changing. Over the past few years, as the price of oil has climbed and car sales have suffered, automakers have scrambled to offer more fuel-efficient vehicles. Some makers, such as Toyota (TM) and Honda, were already bringing hybrid cars to market, including Toyota's Prius, and most had some form of alternative-fuel skunkworks in their budget. But for the most part they were caught flat-footed by the sudden surge in demand for fuel-economic cars.

Take BMW (BMWG) and Mercedes-Benz (DAI), for example. Both companies are renowned for the performance and elegance of their cars, but they had been so successful making diesels for the European market that they never seriously explored hybrid or electric technologies. Their hope was that diesel would one day become a viable alternative in the U.S., where for years many states, such as California and New York, have banned the sale of noncommercial diesel vehicles. (Currently the Mercedes E320 Bluetec is the only diesel car that can be leased—but not purchased—in these states as of October 2007.

Internal Combustion Engine or New Electric one

There are many questions about new technology. Some critics question whether the technology will be obsolete by then. Toyota (TM), Nissan (NSANY), and General Motors (GM) all plan to sell plug-in hybrids or electric cars by around 2010. Their executives think the electrification of the automobile is the endgame everyone should be pursuing.

MCE-5 disagrees. Even if the lithium ion batteries used for electric cars get cheaper in the next decade, Rabhi says, "The future of the automobile will be the internal combustion engine for the next 20 to 30 years."

In the end, both will be right. If players like Mercedes and MCE-5 have their engines ready and the cost is really as low as they claim, the new engines could simply be mated to a hybrid system, says James N. Hall, principal of 2953 Analytics, a Detroit consulting firm.

There are other challenges to these engines. If you increase the compression ratios, it creates more oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, which is a component of smog. So the engines' makers will have to clean the emissions. "Everybody is working on it," Hall says. With gasoline prices expected to remain high, everyone has plenty of incentive.

MCE-5 has shown impressive results in the lab. But can it deliver the bang for the buck that its executives promise? The company's engine needs more parts, which add cost, says Gott. They also can cause more engine knock, which is a pinging noise most drivers find unacceptable.

The company admits a lot of work still needs to be done. But it has a number of well-heeled backers, including French carmaker PSA (PEUP), the parent of Peugeot and Citroën. Private investors have put in $30 million and the French government another $18 million. Later this year, MCE-5 plans to try the technology in a Peugeot car and hopes to sell it for some test fleets in 2012 or 2013, Rabhi says.

Mercedes-Benz (DAI) showed off its F 700 concept car with a similar kind of engine last year. The car is the size of its stately S-class flagship sedan (BusinessWeek.com, 5/10/06) that runs on a 44-mpg four-cylinder engine. Mercedes is excited about the technology, but says it won't be ready for the road until well after 2010.

Today every company may be trying to improve its car efficiency w.r.t. fuel. There is one small side benefit to gasoline selling above $4 a gallon and oil prices setting new records almost daily. From lonely inventors to small research firms to big car makers, everyone is scrambling to find new ways to improve fuel economy. They're not just working on the hybrid-electric vehicles and electric cars that make big headlines. Engineers across the globe are also working on ways to improve the good old gasoline engines that power today's cars.

For example MCE-5 Development. This researcher based in Lyon, France, is the latest company to try to make a gasoline engine that will give cars the efficiency of hybrid-electric vehicles and clean diesels for a fraction of the cost. MCE-5 says it can get a 35% fuel economy boost from its 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. In a test lab, the company has gotten 220 hp and about 45 mpg, and all for less than $1,000 a vehicle.

The company believes that even by the middle of the next decade, when its engines will be ready for production, hybrids will still be too expensive for every driver. "It's possible to have the fuel efficiency of a hybrid for one-tenth the cost," says Vianney Rabhi, director of strategy and development for MCE-5. "Even if there's a big step in battery development, hybrids will be costly."

Optimum Compression

There are, of course, plenty of skeptics. Some say the technology will be more expensive than manufacturers think once they try to mass produce it. Plus, by 2015 hybrids may be much cheaper and better performing. "No one will dispute the results they get," says Phil Gott, director of automotive consulting for Boston-based Global Insight. "The challenge is taking it out of the lab and designing it for mass production." Others say the technology could simply be used with a hybrid system to make a super-efficient car.

The whole idea is to make a gasoline engine operate more like a diesel engine. The engine compresses the mix of air and fuel under higher pressure than today's conventional engines, forcing the piston to move faster and generate more torque. MCE-5 also has a series of gears that can adjust the compression of the air and fuel mix to optimize fuel economy. Gearheads call it Variable Compression Ratio (VCR), because the cars are engineered to run at the optimum compression of fuel and air rather than at one steady rate.

Other engineering companies and car makers are working on a similar concept. Mercedes-Benz said last year that it may start selling an engine with the same kind of technology sometime in the next decade.Now they must also work on the alternative fuels. As oil is running out rapidly .

Apple’s factory leak is just getting bigger, and Vietnam continues to be the undiscovered country of Apple leaks, this time with exclusive photos of the new iPod Touch… this time sporting the long rumored 2MP camera we’ve been waiting for for the past years.

The market-place holds two main players: people, that is consumers, and businesses, that is businesses that sell to other businesses (or B2B). First the Consumers! When you are doing your project you are either looking for articles dealing with "consumer behavior" which is supported by two major types of research.
(1) Demographic Research: that is, counting people in different ways (according to sex, education, age, income, race, etc.). The basic questions being: what? who? how? where? when? For example: What product was purchased? Who purchased it? How was it purchased (e.g. credit, catalog, e-commerce), etc.
And (2), the missing question is WHY did they buy it? Which brings up the concept of Psychographic Research...we are still muddling around in why people buy things.
All of this research establishes a pattern for SEGMENTING the market. The segmenting is done simultaneously with another analysis. A strategy which combines target market opportunities is created for selling the product or service, by integrating the product or service in terms of the 4 P's or: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. When the Segmentation and 4 P's have been integrated, a final perspective must be include which integrates the strategic environment (the economy, culture, competitors, government, etc.). A major transition is occuring in the market place by virtue of the growth of the Internet.

These sources are also easy to read, but you have to take some time to study what they have to offer: e.g. EBI (Effective Buying Income) doesn't mean anything unless you read the definition in the forward of the reports. How to differentiate leadership from management

John Kotter was on the right track in saying that leaders and managers have different functions. But, crucially, we need to stick to a functional story, where everyone can engage in some managing and some leading regardless of role or style:

Leadership promotes new directions; management executes existing directions.

If you are seeking new directions then you must have leadership qualities and when you ave found out the required directions then it is the function of management o get them executed.

The function of management

Management can do much more than merely keep things ticking over. It manages complex projects ranging from making a major movie to putting the first man on the moon. Managers can use facilitative skills to foster innovation. By sticking to a purely functional definition, we leave completely open the question of style. This liberating move means that managers can be inspiring. They can empower, nurture and develop talent. An inspiring leader influences us to change direction while an inspiring manager motivates us to work harder. Managers needn't be restricted to mechanical control, transactional rewards, bureaucratic methods or relating without empathy. Portraying managers in such negative terms was an accident of history that we now must put behind us.

To get the best out of knowledge workers, managers might set up self-managing teams. Here, the classic functions of management (planning, organizing and controlling) are delegated. But the function of management is still operating even though the manager is not personally doing it. This should dispel the myth of the manager as a control freak or bureaucrat.

By removing all style connotations, leadership benefits as much as management. No longer needing to be inspiring cheerleaders, leaders find it possible to exhibit quiet, factual leadership. This is essential in technical contexts, where a hard business case often moves stakeholders more than an inspirational delivery. Not being committed by definition to any particular style, both leaders and managers are free to use any style that works for the context in which they want to make a difference.

Conventional leadership is a static concept: gaining and holding a position of power in a fixed hierarchy. Such leaders have a stake in the status quo. But rapid change driven by innovation has created a more dynamic context in which leadership has to operate. The rise of the creative class locates the emergence of new directions at the front lines. The advocacy of new directions becomes leadership when the group follows or adopts the proposed change. Since it’s not a role, leadership occurs only when people follow an influence attempt.

In a dynamic context, no one has a monopoly on good ideas. Creative class leadership is ephemeral, no longer a role. Being so fleeting, leadership shifts dynamically from one person to another, much as in guerrilla warfare, thus spelling the end of static, role-based leadership.

Sometimes people might be thinking ta leadership and management are two different fields . But We cannot ignore one while talking about the other. Despite valiant efforts to separate leadership from management, the two roles remain entangled. Now it does not matter whether you take them separately or jointly . Many refuse to differentiate between them at all. Some ignore management or confine it to a menial maintenance role operating in the engine room, "keeping things ticking over." With such a poor image, it's no wonder that so few want to be managers. Leadership is the glory role on the white charger, inspiring the troops to carry out grand visions.

Because leadership hogs the lion's share of the responsibility and credit for driving organizational success, management has little to do. This reality is unsustainable; today’s complex business environment demands a broader sharing of the load. In an age of obesity, our current concept of leadership is the most bloated idea in town. To slim leadership down, management must be given more to do. This calls for a major upgrade, making management a much more proactive, positive force in organizations.

Reasons Why it matters

We need to reinvent management because a radically new concept of leadership is emerging. The rise of Richard Florida's creative class¹ means that innovative knowledge workers who create the future are the new leaders.

Creative Class Leadership

To compete in the guerrilla war of ideas, we need creative class leadership, the bottom-up promotion of new products. Those in charge need to be recast as managers who show leadership only occasionally. This is a major change but an essential one wherever innovation is critical for success. If leadership simply promotes changes in direction, management must take on a hugely expanded role.

Leadership May became a bloated mess

Our thinking about leadership went off the rails when we over reacted to Japanese business success in the 1970s. Recognizing that efficient execution was no longer enough, we demanded more innovation and condemned managers for being bureaucratic. Instead of upgrading management from a mechanical, controlling function to a facilitative, developmental one, we reacted emotionally, replacing managers with leaders. Managers were tarred and feathered with language previously used to describe management styles. For example, prior to the Japanese invasion, we said that managers could initiate structure or show consideration for people, be task oriented or people oriented, theory X or theory Y. To punish managers for letting us down, we blessed leaders with the good-guy styles and damned management with the bad-guy ones. The next step was to portray leaders as transformational and managers as transactional. Management henceforth became a virtual four letter word.

Newly Labeled Leadership

This whole train of thought had disastrous consequences. Newly labeled "leaders" got stuck with the impossible demand of being cheerleaders, while management was painted into a dark corner where nobody wanted to be seen dead. If managers weren't quite in the grave yet, Abraham Zaleznik, a Harvard Business School emeritus professor of leadership, buried them by claiming that they were different types of people. They apparently lacked empathy and were control freaks, who could only motivate employees with "rewards, punishments, and other forms of coercion."² John Kotter attempted to save management with a functional definition. Management, he claimed, deals with complexity while leaders focus on change³. But in the 1980s, Kotter's thinking was constrained by management's fall from grace and he failed to create a fully functional story. Instead, his managers were limited to mechanical control with little to do but keep things ticking over in the engine room. Warren Bennis's well known saying: "leaders do the right things, managers do things right" at least recognized that doing things right was still important. But by the time Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner started writing about leadership, management was long gone, which is why it is completely absent in their writing. It has been all about leadership, however bloated, ever since.

By seizing the territory once occupied by management, leadership aims to motivate high levels of performance in employees. Motivation used to be what managers did until leadership usurped its role. The whole point of the transformational leadership bandwagon is nicely summed up in the title of Bernard Bass's well known book: Leadership and Performance Beyond Expectations. Clearly such leadership is all about employee performance. Note that this book was published in 1985, at the height of the backlash against management.

But surely performance is within management's domain. There is no convincing argument to the contrary, beyond the emotional rationalizations brought on by the success of the Japanese. By constantly portraying leadership as a downward-directed effort to get work done through subordinates, it's hard to understand how it can be shown flowing in any other direction. How can leadership be shown going sideways to colleagues or upward if it simply promotes a better way and has nothing to do with getting things done through people? The old idea of informal leadership is no help because it still entails taking charge of a group and directing its efforts toward a goal.

It is time to put 1980s thinking behind us and make a fresh start. We are over the Japanese crisis, and innovation is even more important than it was in the 70s and 80s.

All are not a leaders but one can improve his or her leadership qualities or may improve them. No body is born educated or scholar. You can boost your leadership skills and hence your career by understanding this one thing that most leaders miss: great leadership incorporates a spiritual dimension.

This spiritual dimension has been a part of leadership since time in memorial; but in today's global economy, it is undergoing an historic, universal transformation. It's a transformation that speaks directly to your individual leadership and career challenges.

However, when we talk about the spiritual in leadership, we must, first and foremost, talk about results -- the results leaders achieve. Concrete results. Hard, measured results. Plus, we must talk about getting more of them, getting them faster, and getting "more, faster" continually. Otherwise, there is no sense in delving into the spiritual aspect of leadership.

Results are the stuff that leaders are made of. If they're not getting results, they won't be leaders for long. Results come in countless forms and functions. But one thing they all share: they are material consequences of actions.

Are you aware that you can't see spirit, you can't hear it, you can't smell it, you can't taste it, you can't feel it; however, if you ignore the non-material that the spiritual encompasses, you'll give short shrift to your leadership.

Just as the root word for spirit comes from Latin "to breathe" so spiritual dimensions of leadership are its very life-breath; for through it, the greatest results are achieved.

Spirit has been applied to many different things in different fields: to stealth bombers, corporations, rock bands, comic book characters, etc. In religion, spirit is the concept of an innate essence of a being. All religions embrace spirit in many ways. But when applied to leadership, spirit is differently manifested than with organized religions. The spiritual aspect of leadership I'm talking about must be exerted universally in the global market place, across cultures, nations, ethnic groups, etc. No religion has a corner on the spirit of leadership.

Fortunately, there is a universal ground for the kind of spirit needed in today's leadership: the spiritual wisdom of tribal cultures. Anthropologists have come to identify common features in the diversity of tribal cultures around the world. First, they are earth-based. The relationship between the earth and the people is one of mystical interdependence. Second, the powers of nature, the acts of daily life, birth/death, nature and the cosmos are all invested with deep meaning through ritual and dance. Third, most tribal cultures view all individual things that make up our universe -- rocks, stars, mountains, rivers, people, animals, fish, etc. -- as interdependent.

This interdependence is not just a physical dynamic. Yes, we live on the same earth, breath the same air, and are all mortal. But tribal cultures understand it as a spiritual dynamic as well. Unlike the concept of human souls, which are believed to be eternal and preexisting, one's spirit according to tribal wisdom develops and grows as an integral aspect of a person living interdependently with the community and its environment.

Today, these interdependent features of tribal spiritual wisdom can be applied with dramatic consequences to global leadership. Just as tribe members saw themselves as interdependent with their tribe and their spiritual deities and dictums, so today's leaders in order to be truly successful on a global stage must see themselves in similar interdependent terms. However, the difference today is that interdependence is not with a tribe but with people the world over and with the world environment. That's a profound, spiritual leadership lesson, hard but necessary to actualize, from which great leadership results flow.

How do we actualize this spiritual imperative? Enter the Leadership Talk. I have been teaching the Leadership Talk to leaders of all ranks and functions worldwide for nearly a quarter of a century.
