Honda notes the system is not 100-percent ready. It still needs fine-tuning for the wide range of cetane indices found in U.S. diesel, and a way to measure its own emissions to meet U.S. On-Board Diagnostic System Requirements. Honda announced it intends to make the technology available within three years, but DaimlerChrysler AG has stated it intends to release its next-generation diesel car -- created in partnership with Volkswagen -- by 2008.

"Just as we paved the way for cleaner gasoline engines, we will take the leadership in the progress of diesel engines," said Takeo Fukui, chief executive of Honda, adding that Honda might consider licensing its diesel technology once it has been perfected. iPod Sales- In percentages

iPods were the primary growth engine for FY05 and FY06, responsible for roughly 58% of Apple’s total revenue growth for both years. In FY07, iPod segment generated only 14% of overall sales growth. As a percentage of total revenue, iPod accounted for 33% [FY05], 40% [FY06], 35% [FY07] and 28% [FY08].

The iPod is becoming less significant for revenue growth due to the success of the Mac and iPhone segments. Apple’s revenue grew 35% in FY08 and 24% in FY07, yet the iPod was the slowest growing segment both years. In the last quarter [4Q08], iPod sales were only 21% of total revenue, and less than 15% not using iPhone subscription accounting. Thus, concerns about flagging iPod sales detrimentally impacting Apple’s overall business are stretched since the iPod is becoming less of a contributor. On a non-GAAP basis, the largest revenue contributing segments are the iPhone and Mac, which are the also the fastest growers.

Historically, Apple has introduced new iPod models at high prices then gradually lowered prices. Unit volume accelerates at lower price points, but the decrease in ASP results in less dollar sales growth. The reverse is true when Apple introduces models at high ASPs, which offsets the effect of lower unit volume on dollar revenue. In a saturated market, demand elasticity evaporates as unit volume is not responsive to lower prices. The focus shifts to motivating current users to upgrade to new-featured models at higher price points.

A common belief is that Apple has sold so many iPods, that there isn’t anyone left that doesn’t already own one. In a sense, that’s almost literally true. Those that would enjoy such a device likely have already bought one. Figuratively speaking, the low hanging fruit has been picked. Therefore, Apple needs to keep introducing new models with advanced features that will entice user upgrades and appeal to new consumers lying beyond the PMP market. Apple has accomplished this with the Touch.

iPod’s first two years on sale, ASPs averaged around $350. Then in Q404 (September) Apple cut iPod prices $100 and demand increased considerably. In Q205, Apple priced the “Mini” iPod model at $199 along with launching the shuffle. This resulted in ASP dropping to $191 in Q2 from $264 in Q1. Unit sales exploded even exceeding the previous period which was a holiday quarter. ASP trended down over the next couple quarters until Q106 when the video iPod was released. ASP rose to $207. ASPs gradually fell over the subsequent 8 quarters, sustaining unit volume growth.

In FY07, unit sales growth was 31%, but revenue growth was only 8%. In 1Q08, Apple introduced the Touch model which carried a significantly higher ASP. This resulted in FY08 iPod revenue growth of 10% on top of 6.2% unit growth. That’s right, iPod revenue growth was higher in FY08 compared to FY07. Thus, even though unit volume has slowed materially, dollar revenue growth has actually increased. I think that point is often missed from investors and the media primarily focusing on unit sales.

iPod unit sales only grew 5% YOY for 1Q08, but dollar sales increased by 17% due to a higher average selling price [ASP]. After 8 consecutive quarters of declining ASP, the Touch reversed that trend as ASP rose to $181/unit in 1Q08. You would have to go back 6 quarters to find a higher ASP. We have seen a decline in ASP since Q1 mainly due to the price cut for iPod Shuffles, which management stated has had a very positive effect on volume.

In the September quarter [Q4], ASP fell to $150, primarily due to the back-to-school promotion. I surmise that ASP might have been $20-$25 higher otherwise. Going forward, I expect the recent trend of declining ASPs to reverse. ASPs will rise due to the sales mix skewing towards the Touch model. The July opening of iTunes App store, along with the September’s introduction of the 2nd generation Touch model at reduced prices, will substantially boost demand.

While it's a fraction of the projected 100mbps that the next-generation wireless broadband promises, Sprint's 4G network raises the bar so that customers can get wireless data speeds comparable to middle-ground wired broadband speeds, and allows businesses to expand the tasks and functions that are possible over a wireless network.

Sprint outlines some business scenarios that are made possible by the faster 4G broadband speeds:

More than with past launches, there were worries about limited supplies after more than 600,000 people rushed to pre-order iPhones on the first day they were available, prompting Apple and its exclusive wireless partner in the U.S., AT&T Inc., to stop taking orders for shipment by Thursday's launch. On Apple's website, new orders weren't promised for delivery until July 14.

In Aventura, Fla., Loren and Veronica McHenry held out hope after miscommunications landed them at the back of the line. They had arrived at 9 p.m. Wednesday and were told no one was allowed on mall property overnight. They returned only to learn that 120 people had camped out at a nearby parking lot.

"There's no coordination between the mall employees, security and law enforcement," said Loren McHenry, 42, shaking his head in disbelief. "It's a mess. ... They said we'll all get iPhones. I hope that's true."

The new iPhone model, the fourth model since the original came out in 2007, is thinner with a better-resolution screen and longer battery life.

"I like the design. It's sleek — I think it's cool!" said Yoko Kosugi, 41, a graphic designer in Tokyo, who took her new phone out of her bag to show it off, plastic wrapping still on the screen.

It features a new operating system that can also be installed on some older models, such as the 3GS, along with cameras on both sides to permit face-to-face video calls.

"This is revolutionary in the U.S. for deaf people to have a mobile device they can use to communicate in their native language," said Beth Henriksen, 30, a sign language interpreter in Washington.

At the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., 22-year-old DeVry University student Noah Chavez said he's especially drawn to the new phone's multitasking ability and its improved resolution. "More pixels than your eye can decipher."

At the Apple store in Tokyo's swanky Ginza shopping district, staff handed out bottled water and loaned black umbrellas with the company logo. A man dressed as a giant iPhone danced and waived his arms as he made it to the front of the line.

In Washington, Apple employees brought free bagels, cream cheese and bottled water as temperatures climbed to the high 80s by midmorning. Those waiting in Cherry Hill, N.J., got free Starbucks coffee; as each customer entered the store, a cheer went up from the congenial, caffeine-fueled and slaphappy crowd.

Maria Powell, 41, of Hollywood, Fla., made it a family affair. Her nephew, her son, his girlfriend and a friend had camped outside of the Apple store in Aventura since 4:30 p.m. Wednesday — more than 14 hours before the phones went on sale.

"My eyes are twitching, my body is going into shock ... but I am getting the newest gadget," said Powell's nephew, Steven Casillas, 25, of Miami Lakes, Fla.

Alex Lee, a 27-year-old customer who flew to London from Dubai to join the 500-person-long line along Regent Street, said his journey and hours of waiting had been worth it. "It's so thin, maybe five or six credit cards thick — it's amazing," he said, clutching his new handset.

Some customers, though, weren't buying the iPhone 4 for its new features and size.

"I have the 3GS, but my friend dropped it in a pitcher of beer last week," said Julia Glanternik, 28, a medical student in New York.

Alden Leonard, 24, of Washington, broke his iPhone last weekend after an accident involving tequila. He declined to elaborate, only saying his old iPhone "is no more." He said he wouldn't have stood in line otherwise and admitted, "This is a little obsessive."

What was more surprising is how poorly General Motors did. Cadillac tumbled from third place with 91 problems to a tie for 12th place with 111 problems. Chevrolet went from ninth to 12th, falling below the industry average. GMC went from 18th to 25th. Of GM's four brands, only Buick improved. The survey tracks complaints during the first 90 days that a consumer owned the car. The problems can be anything from a mechanical breakdown to, say, too much wind noise to mundane things like the driver griping about the size of the cupholders.

What's worrisome for GM is that the culprit happens to be the company's newest models. Dave Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president of global vehicle research, said new models are often weaker in quality than cars that have been on the market for a few years. Carmakers have time to find glitches and work them out.

For the improvement Sargent says GM can easily improve its quality performance by patching up new models like the Cadillac SRX and Chevrolet Camaro. But this is terrible news for a GM management team that is trying to convince buyers that the company is new, improved and doing things differently. Some of GM's new models are selling well; the Cadillac SRX, Chevy Equinox SUV and Camaro in particular are red hot. In a move that may be even more important to the long-term interests of the mainland, the China Development Bank agreed to loan Brazil's oil giant Petrobras (PBR) $10 billion for exploration projects. The South American oil company also apparently agreed to sell China-controlled oil company Sinopec (SNP) crude supplies for the balance of the year. It does not take detective work to come to the conclusion that the two arrangements were related.

China can afford to be in any business for the long haul if it is convinced that it is in its national interest. That cannot be said about any other nation in the world, especially the United States. The American government is putting its money to work trying to save the financial system and millions of jobs. Japanese companies were able to aggressively move into the U.S. and European car markets in the 1970s and 1980s to a large extent because of their low labor costs. The only hurdle that stands in the way of China's interest in buying car-company assets in the West is the potential desire of governments in the U.S. and E.U. to block buyouts.
