iPhone In China Mobile Coming Soon

American Management

Management have been a big issue for many firms and associations. After a decade of painstaking research, we have concluded that American firms are on average the best managed in the world. This is not what we—a group of European researchers—expected to find. But while Americans are bad at football (or soccer, as it's known as locally), they are the Brazilians of Management. If you are good in management then you have a good talent in running an association

Over the past decade, a team from Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, McKinsey & Company, and Stanford has systematically surveyed global management. We have developed a tool to measure management practices across operational management, monitoring, targets, and people management. We scored each dimension on a range of practices to generate an overall management score, surveying over 10,000 firms in 20 countries. This has allowed us to create the first global database of management practices.

Let us see some findings after research.

Well managed firms thrash their poorly managed competitors

First, not surprisingly, we find that organizations with better management massively outperform their disorganized competitors. They make more money, grow faster, have far higher stock market values, and survive for longer. (For details see our previous HBR blog post.)

The American Management Century

Second, when it comes to overall management, American firms outperform all others. This U.S. dominance occurs in the manufacturing, retail, and health care sectors (but interestingly, not in high schools). Japanese, German, and Swedish firms follow closely behind. In contrast, developing countries like Brazil, China, and India lag at the bottom of the management charts. Southern European countries like Portugal and Greece appear to have management practices barely better than those of most developing countries. In the middle stand countries like the UK, France, Italy, and Australia, which have reasonable but not brilliant management practices.

Bottom dwellers drive the rankings down

While the ranking of countries is certainly eye-catching, the real story lies within the countries. Almost 90% of the cross-country differences are driven by the size of the "tail" of really badly managed firms within each country. Countries like the U.S. that excel have hardly any badly managed firms, while those like India that have low average scores have a mass of very badly managed firms pulling down their averages.

Every country has some world-class firms

But while there are many of these extremely badly managed, every country also hosts some excellent firms. Even bottom-ranking India has dozens of firms that use world-class management practices. A key takeaway is that individual companies are not trapped by the national environments in which they operate — there are top performers in all countries surveyed. Conversely, being in a world-class environment like the U.S. does not guarantee success. Even in America, more than 15% of firms are so badly managed that they are worse than the average Chinese or Indian firm.

What is the secret sauce of management success?

One of the biggest drivers of these differences is variation in people management. American firms are ruthless at rapidly rewarding and promoting good employees and retraining or firing bad employees. The reasons are threefold.

1. The U.S. has tougher levels of competition. Large and open U.S. markets generate the type of rapid management evolution that allows only the best-managed firms to survive.

2. Human capital is important. America traditionally gets far more of its population into college than other nations.

3. The U.S. has more flexible labor markets. It is much easier to hire and fire employees.

Many developing-country firms, even while trying to implement new techniques like Lean Management, ignore the fact that labor is different from other "inputs." Many of the Chinese firms surveyed did not even employ managers who spoke the same language as the workers, relying on interpreters or basic sign-language for communication. As you can imagine, this does not lead to a feeling of mutual support between management and workers.

But the U.S. should not be complacent. Other countries equal or better the U.S. in some of the other areas of management we examined, such as careful monitoring, lean production, and sensible targets. The manufacturing prowess of Germany, which has helped it weather the recent downturn so well, is built upon such advantages. Furthermore, although Chinese management practices are well below U.S. standards, they showed the fastest improvement since 2006 of any country we have looked at.

Changing the ranks and reaping the rewards

What lessons emerge for others wanting to reach the top of the ranking?

The answer is not for all firms to be more American but rather to consider some of the practices U.S. firms—and especially U.S. multinationals—continually exhibit and implement. Across all countries, organizations that properly incentivize talented workers, whether through promotion, pay, or other rewards, outperform others. As best practices spread and firms continue to implement these techniques they will narrow the existing gaps, reaping huge growth and profitability gains. Comparing August contracts, WTI was trading about 80 cents lower than Brent on Friday. The front-month July WTI contract is likely to behave more erratically as it nears expiry on June 22. “Often these things occur when there are high levels of liquidity at Cushing,” Moore said. “WTI expiry is getting close and you normally get some changes in positions.”

Future Fuel Business

Along with this smog comes carbon dioxide, the gas that's principally responsible for climate change. The steady increase in pollution has caused governments around the world to create legislation that will limit the volume of greenhouse gases that we can put into the atmosphere. The Australian Government has committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by between five and 15 per cent below year 2000 levels by 2020.

In addition to reducing pollution, many nations, such as the United States, have talked about energy independence. That is, being able to generate energy, especially renewable energy, domestically without having to rely on imported oil either from unstable regions of the world or from regimes deemed unfriendly.

In many ways hydrogen is an ideal fuel. In fact, when scientists really needed a fuel that would go the distance, they turned to hydrogen to generate power on NASA's Apollo missions — hydrogen was used as a propellant for the Saturn V rockets, while hydrogen fuel cells were used to power the electronics inside the command modules — including the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first humans on the moon in 1969.

As hydrogen is gas under normal conditions, it's typically compressed under high pressure, in a similar manner to the liquid petroleum gas (LPG) that's commonly used in Aussie taxis and other high mileage vehicles. While taxis burn LPG instead of petrol in a normal internal combustion engine, hydrogen fuel cells are quite a different beast.

While fuel cells may sound fancy, they are actually quite similar to batteries. Like batteries, fuel cells generate electricity, meaning that any car that runs off a fuel cell is actually an electric car. Also like batteries, fuel cells mix two chemicals that react to produce an electric current.

However, the important difference with fuel cells is that, unlike batteries, they do not store energy internally. Rather, they have their "fuel" fed directly into the battery "cell", thus the term fuel cell. To simplify things, think of fuel cells as batteries that eat out, rather than bring their lunch.

Can China Produce Future Cars

In the near future it is looking a big deal to produce a car of easy Fuel . Now question is which country is going to produce it. The days are not very far when we will find our current cars useless. Now let us have a look on the producers. One of the biggest Chinese car dealerships, Pang Da Automobile Trade, offered a €110m (£96m) cash injection to get Saab back on the road. Pang Da has handed over €30m for the delivery to Shanghai of 1,300 vehicles, enough perhaps to allow Saab to restart production this week.

But obstacles remain. Saab's suppliers need convincing that Spyker will be able to pay its bills regularly. And the biggest part of the deal with Pang Da, which will see the Chinese firm pay €65m for a 24% stake in the Dutch group, needs regulatory approval from Swedish stakeholders and the Chinese authorities – and that will take time. Saab has a complex ownership structure.

A bigger problem is that Saab needs to set up a manufacturing joint venture in China to gain exposure to the booming Asian market. But Pang Da is not a producer, so the hunt is on to find a Chinese carmaker prepared to join the alliance. Only then will Saab have any hope of a go-ahead from Beijing.

During its 20 years under GM ownership, Saab hardly ever turned a profit. The popular view was that as GM's finances deteriorated (it had to be bailed out by the US government in 2009), it starved Saab of investment.

But Spyker, headed by the enigmatic Victor Muller, has hardly been more successful. Last year, it produced just 32,000 cars, shy of its 50,000 target and well below the 120,000 that analysts believe it needs to break even. Hence the liquidity crisis.

According to Garel Rhys at Cardiff business school, Saab has been on borrowed time for years. "People call it a niche player but it's going up against the likes of BMW, which sells 1.2m units a year. Nor does it have a big backer like Audi, owned by Volkswagen. These days, you need to be a global player, and Saab isn't one."

Saab's heyday was in the 1970s and 80s, when it was one of the first car firm to popularize the turbocharger and the front-wheel drive.

Tim Urquhart, an analyst with IHS Global Insight, says recently Saab has been unable to differentiate itself from its German rivals. And it needs to come up with successful new models, in particular a replacement for its nine-year-old 9-3, its most popular car.

He says: "If Saab is going to work in China, it probably needs to go more upmarket. The Chinese don't want a reheated old-fashioned product. They want something classy and new."

Arguably, what Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has done with MG Rover could be a template for Saab. SAIC is creating new models out of MG for the Chinese market, and slowly introducing them to Europe. The new MG6 five-door "fastback" is a case in point.

But that still leaves Saab fumbling for a Chinese manufacturing partner, and it must be a good one. SAIC is China's biggest carmaker. Geely, which took over Volvo last year, is the country's fifth-largest. "It's important they get in bed with the right company because the Chinese are looking to consolidate the sector, so an alliance with a two-bit player won't work," says Rhys.

Last week, Muller said he was optimistic about Pang Da, which he described as "a forward-looking, profitable and well-capitalised public company that sees enormous potential for our brand in their home market."

Pang Qinghua, chief executive of Pang Da, was equally enthusiastic, saying new products such as the new Saab 9-5 and 9-4X, "make this the right time for Saab to enter the Chinese market". Business In Kuwait

Rules For Business In Kuwait:-The rules of commerce are in general similar to West European practice.
Any Kuwaiti or GCC national over 21 years of age may carry on commerce in Kuwait provided he or she is not affected by a personal legal restriction. But a foreigner (non-GCC national) may not carry on a trade unless he or she more Kuwaiti partners and the capital owned by the Kuwaiti partners(s) in the joint business is not less than 51 % of the total capital (60 % in the case of banks, investments houses and insurance companies). A foreign firm (including a partnership) may not set up a branch and may not perform any commercial activities in the country except through a Kuwait agent. Foreign individuals and firms may not acquire commercial licences in there own name nor may they own real estate locally.
The main laws regulating business in Kuwait, which have been amended several times since they were issued, are (a) The civil code (Law 67 of 1980), (b) The commercial code (Law 68 of 1980), and (c) The commercial companies law (Law 15 of 1960).
Is Business License Necessary ?

To do business, silences is necessary. General trading, contracting, importing and industrial license are issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MCI). For particular commercial activities, specific licences are requierd and these are often issued by the ministry that controls that activity, eg publishing licenses are granted by the Ministry of Information.

Business licenses are only issued to Kuwaiti nationals and Kuwait companies and. In some cases, to GCC nationals and companies. Costs are usually KD100 per licenses, All licenses require period renewal, normally even two years.
The right to import goods into Kuwait on a commercial basis is restricted to Kuwait individuals and firms who are member of the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) and who have import licenses issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MCI).

Import License Is Required:
General import licenses, which must be renewed annually, allow any amount of a variety of products from any country to be imported any number of times. But special licenses are needed to bring in regulated products such as arms, ammunition and explosive, ethyl alcohol, drugs, pesticides, jewellery and precious stone, weights and weighing machines, vintage cars, etc; these too must be renewed annually. Special licences are also needed to import industrial equipment and spare parts; these are issued to industrial firms upon the recommendation of the public Authority for industry and are valid for a single use only.
To protect local morals, alcoholic beverages and materials used in making them, pigs, pork, pork and pigskin products (such as handbags, wallets and shoes), narcotics and associated plants and seeds, pornographic and subversive materials, are, among other items, prohibited. To protect local industry, items such as vehicles over 5 years old and goods manufactured locally are prohibited. Items injurious to health, such as air-guns, asbestos and cyclamates, are banned import from Israel and Iraq are banned absolutely.
All imports, as well as locally made items, must comply with Kuwaiti standard specifications (GCC), a set of common standards being devised under the GCC’s Unified Economic Agreement, apply, and if there is no suitable GCC, the product must adhere to international standards.

People are normally like music to much that they are at the dying position for it. Music is well said to be the speech of angels, a melody that penetrates deep inside our souls to relieve us from anger, disgust and frustration. Music is no longer a hobby; it’s a craze all over the world now. Music holds an immensely powerful influence over the brain and yet few workplaces benefit from musical sounds.But i am not talking about all types of music here.I am talking about the music that inspires you from within, music that calm your thinking and develop courage again to fight back.
There is another opinion about music that it kills the true emotions after some time and they get die from inside. This is also very true as eventually it may turn your emotion into your destruction.

Music listening depends on your mood. You can choose a lot of music like pop,rock,hip hop,dance,disco,reggae,techno,classic,country,folk,hard rock and heavy metal (not to mention death metal for good purposes). Most forms normally sound fun at good times, but when you need something for your heart and soul, nothing rocks you like a soft mellow classical tune. I personally feel along with many others that listening to right music can uplift and inspire you, releasing deep joy or even deep sadness.

I have also observed deep connection of music at the workplaces because it help releases pressure of working in the tense environment. It seems like music is becoming a necessity for survival. Imagine when you hate studying 3 hours long at home, selecting right music can help you bounce back right to study desk by inspiring you to do well.

Solar Energy In Business

Today energy crises is increasing day by day, specially the countries like Pakistan.

With the growth in the number of plants being built and the increasing cost competitiveness, 2011 looks like solar energy could start to come into its own in the U.S.

Even with the entrance of a Republican-controlled Congress, some see a reasonably bright future for solar in the U.S., as many of the subsidies are "baked in" to existing programs, many of which are at the state level, says Joel Silver man of Arete Research Services. State-level programs are less vulnerable to changes in Congress.

The big swing factor, he says, isn't going to be direct subsidies to the industry as much as the growth rates of installations. In Germany, he says, the growth of photovoltaic installed capacity was far more than anyone expected - and more than policymakers really wanted. "There could be a crippling oversupply there," he said.

But even with the dangers of a small-scale asset bubble, there are a number of companies that have shown they can do well. He cites that First Solar as one that built a business model that kept costs down, as it sells to solar project developers. Now if we will not work on this lines then the day may come when this world will again go into the stone age.

In its earnings forecast, the company said it expects 2011 sales ranging from $3.7 billion to $3.9 billion and earnings of $8.75 to $9.50 a share. First Solar also agreed to sell a 290-megawatt solar farm it plans to build in Arizona to NRG Energy Inc.

Adam Krop, analyst at Ardour Capital Investments, says that in 2010 there was 900 megawatts of installed solar power capacity - largely photovoltaics - in the U.S. he estimates that will double in 2011. It's still a small part of the total power market - renewables of any kind were only 4.2 percent of the generation capacity, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and solar would account for less than that. Even with the small capacity, though, the growth is healthy, Krop says, and that bodes well for solar's longer-term future.

According to data from the Solar Electric Power Association, an industry group, of the top 25 solar photovoltaic projects, 13 were completed in 2010. That includes the largest currently running plant to date, the Copper Mountain Solar Facility in Colorado. That adds up to 141.6 megawatts. In 2009, only four of the top 25 were completed.

There are currently seven solar plants that will be in the hundreds of megawatts planned in the United States. The 200-megawatt California Valley Solar Ranch (CVSR), which will sell power to Pacific Gas & Electric, is the only one that is planned for completion in 2011. But there are several smaller projects in the under-100 megawatt range that should start generating power by the beginning of 2012. As everybody is aware of this power crises but only few countries are seriously working on this alternate source of energy.

Communication is the lifeblood of an organization. If we could somehow remove communication flows from an organization, we would not have an organization.

Communication is needed for:

Solar Energy and Jobs

It eliminates 800 jobs in Massachusetts and shut its new factory at the former military base in Devens, just two years after it opened the massive facility to great fanfare and with about $58 million in taxpayer survey.

The company announced yesterday that it will close the plant by the end of March, calling itself a victim of weak demand and competition from cheaper suppliers in China, where the government provides solar companies with generous subsidies.

Evergreen itself has a factory in Wuhan, China, built in collaboration with a Chinese company, Jiawei Solarchina Co. Ltd., and with money from a Chinese government investment fund. The company had previously said it would shift some production from Devens to the Wuhan plant but yesterday was the first time it said Devens would be closed.

“This is a grueling decision for any management team to make,’’ said Evergreen spokesman Michael W. McCarthy, who added that company officials struggled over the fate of the Devens plant “for a particularly long time.’’

The Devens closing is a major hit to Governor Deval Patrick’s efforts to make Massachusetts a hub of the emerging clean-energy industry. The administration persuaded Evergreen to build at Devens with a package of grants, land, loans, and other aid originally valued at $76 million. The company ended up taking about $58 million, one of the largest aid packages Massachusetts has provided to a private company, and the governor was the featured guest at Evergreen’s ribbon-cutting in July 2008.

“We are disappointed to learn about Evergreen Solar’s decision,’’ Greg Bialecki, Patrick’s secretary for housing and economic development, said in a written statement. “The company has worked hard to compete against heavily subsidized foreign competition and to live up to its commitments to the Commonwealth.’’

In the 2010 gubernatorial campaign, Patrick was heavily criticized by his rivals for providing so much public aid to a company during tight fiscal times. One mark of the sensitivity of the issue: Evergreen yesterday requested that the State Police provide four troopers for security at the Devens plant until it closes, two Massachusetts officials said.

The plant closing is also likely to revive the debate over the use of state funds to help private companies under economic development programs.

“I really hope the Legislature and the governor take a hard look at these tax-break strategies for big corporations,’’ said state Senator James B. Eldridge, a Democrat from Acton whose district includes Devens. Eldridge has pushed to give the state more authority to recover public funds from companies that fail to deliver jobs and live up to commitments they make. It is the time of change to solar because this is the time of energy crises.

Women As Leader 2

As in the previous article you read about women as leader , now read more about them.The new studies offer some clues about why the cultural mismatch between women and large companies persists and why it's so critical to keep women on board. What makes the new research more compelling than other such data is that it is based on results culled from executives' actual performance evaluations rather than on opinion surveys or experiments that simulate business situations.

Sometimes it may be difficult to have an idea .Because the participants had no idea that their evaluations would end up as part of a study on gender, the data are untainted, says Janet Irwin, a California management consultant who conducted one of the studies. ''We were startled by the results,'' she says.

Irwin and her colleagues discovered that women ranked higher than men on 28 of 31 measures. Irwin was stunned by women's consistently high ratings and how the scores defied conventional wisdom. Contrary to stereotypes, women outperformed men in all kinds of intellectual areas, such as producing high-quality work, recognizing trends, and generating new ideas and acting on them. ''Women's strengths are stronger than men's,'' says Irwin, ''and their weaknesses are not as pronounced.''

Several other studies showed similar patterns. Personnel Decisions International, a consulting firm in Minneapolis, looked at a huge sample--58,000 managers--and found that women outranked men in 20 of 23 areas. Larry Pfaff, a Michigan management consultant, examined evaluations from 2,482 executives from a variety of companies and found that women outperformed men on 17 of 20 measures.

Some of the researchers draw different conclusions, though, arguing that the research shows that women executives are equally effective as their male counterparts but not necessarily superior. While women score better, and the scores are statistically significant, says Susan Gebelein, executive vice-president of Personnel Decisions, those differences don't mean much in the real world. Why? Because the consulting firm has tested so many thousands of people, which can make minor differences appear more important than they really are. Women have always outscored men in such evaluations, says Gebelein, whose company began looking at gender differences in 1984. And they score highest at the most male-dominated companies because, she surmises, of the type of woman who succeeds in such environments--someone who must be superior in every way.

Robert Kabacoff, a vice-president at Management Research Group in Portland, Me., also wondered if women were getting higher test scores in these studies for reasons other than gender. They might have rated higher because they weren't being compared with men holding similar jobs, he suggests. Managers of human-resources departments often get rated higher on people skills than other supervisors, for instance. If the majority of female managers in a study work in human resources, vs. only a minority of males, the results may have more to do with job than gender.

MISUNDERSTOOD. To eliminate such potential distortions, Kabacoff conducted a differently designed study in 1998. He compared male and female managers who worked at the same companies, held similar jobs, were at the same management level, and had the same amount of supervisory experience. When he examined 1,800 supervisors in 22 management skills, he found that women outranked men on about half of the measures. Female managers were graded more effective by peers and subordinates, but bosses still judged men and women equally competent as leaders. ''Men and women seem to be doing roughly equally effective jobs, but they approach their jobs differently,'' says Kabacoff.

Certainly, many women managers are keenly aware that they inhabit a different reality at the office than men. Nancy Hawthorne, former chief financial officer at Continental Cablevision Inc., who is now a consultant, says she often felt her bosses ''wondered what the heck I was doing.'' At meetings, she often allowed subordinates to explain the details of ongoing projects. She felt her role was to delegate tasks to people around her to help them be more effective. ''I was being traffic cop and coach and facilitator,'' she said. ''I was always into building a department that hummed.''

And sometimes, women say, they were badgered about using the very skills the research found so valuable. Sandra Kiely, managing director and chief administrative officer at National City Investment Management Co. in Cleveland, recalls that one of her bosses at National City Bank warned that her management style would hurt her career. ''You should be looking out for yourself, not your people,'' he advised her.

Everyone knows that women have long excelled at teamwork, but getting results was one of the categories in which women earned their highest marks in these studies. Jackie Streeter, Apple Computer Inc.'s ( AAPL) vice-president for engineering, says she has repeatedly volunteered to shift dozens of employees out of her division because she felt they would better fit into a different department--a move that she says ''startled'' her male colleagues. ''It's not the size of your organization that counts but the size of the results you get,'' says Streeter, who has 350 people working for her.

Women As Leader

In past it was very difficult to imagine that a women can also work like men. But today there are many fields in which women are working side by side.Twenty-five years after women first started pouring into the labor force--and trying to be more like men in every way, from wearing power suits to picking up golf clubs--new research is showing that men ought to be the ones doing more of the imitating. In fact, after years of analyzing what makes leaders most effective and figuring out who's got the Right Stuff, management gurus now know how to boost the odds of getting a great executive: Hire a female.

That's the essential finding of a growing number of comprehensive management studies conducted by consultants across the country for companies ranging from high-tech to manufacturing to consumer services. By and large, the studies show that women executives, when rated by their peers, underlings, and bosses, score higher than their male counterparts on a wide variety of measures--from producing high-quality work to goal-setting to mentoring employees. Using elaborate performance evaluations of execs, researchers found that women got higher ratings than men on almost every skill measured. Ironically, the researchers weren't looking to ferret out gender differences. They accidentally stumbled on the findings when they were compiling hundreds of routine performance evaluations and then analyzing the results.

The gender differences were often small, and men sometimes earned higher marks in some critical areas, such as strategic ability and technical analysis. But overall, female executives were judged more effective than their male counterparts. ''Women are scoring higher on almost everything we look at,'' says Shirley Ross, an industrial psychologist who helped oversee a study performed by Hagberg Consulting Group in Foster City, Calif. Hagberg conducts in-depth performance evaluations of senior managers for its diverse clients, including technology, health care, financial-service, and consumer-goods companies. Of the 425 high-level executives evaluated, each by about 25 people, women execs won higher ratings on 42 of the 52 skills measured.
The growing body of new research comes at a time when talent-hungry recruiters are scrambling to find execs who can retain workers and who can excel in the smaller bureaucracies of New Economy companies. Women think through decisions better than men, are more collaborative, and seek less personal glory, says the head of IBM's Global Services Div., Douglas Elix, who hired two managers within this year--both women. Instead of being motivated by self-interest, women are more driven by ''what they can do for the company,'' Elix says. Adds Harvard Business School Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author of the 20-year-old management classic, Men and Women of the Corporation: ''Women get high ratings on exactly those skills needed to succeed in the global Information Age, where teamwork and partnering are so important.''

It's no surprise, then, that some executives say they're beginning to develop a new hiring bias. If forced to choose between equally qualified male and female candidates for a top-level job, they say they often pick the woman--not because of affirmative action or any particular desire to give the female a chance but because they believe she will do a better job. ''I would rather hire a woman,'' says Anu Shukla, who sold her Internet marketing-software company Rubric Inc. earlier this year for $390 million. ''I know I'm going to get a certain quality of work, I know I'm going to get a certain dedication,'' she says, quickly adding that she's fully aware that not all women execs excel. Similarly, Brent Clark, CEO of Grand Rapids-based Pell Inc., the nation's largest foot-care chain, says he would choose a woman over a man, too. Women are more stable, he says, less turf-conscious, and better at ''all sorts of intangibles that can help an organization.''

But if women are so great, why aren't more of them running the big companies? Thousands of talented women now graduate from business schools and hold substantive middle-management jobs at major corporations--45% of all managerial posts are held by females, according to the Labor Dept. Yet only two of the nation's 500 biggest companies have female CEOs: Hewlett-Packard Co.'s ( HWP) Carly Fiorina and Avon Products' ( AVP) Andrea Jung. And of the 1,000 largest corporations, only six are run by women.

UNREWARDED. For one thing, there's still a pipeline problem: Most women get stuck in jobs that involve human resources or public relations--posts that rarely lead to the top. At the same time, female managers' strengths have long been undervalued, and their contributions in the workplace have gone largely unnoticed and unrewarded. Companies are now saying they want the skills women typically bring to the job, but such rhetoric doesn't always translate into reality. Some businesses view women only as workhorses, well-suited for demanding careers in middle management but not for prime jobs. These undercurrents of bias in Corporate America infuriate many women, who then bail out rather than navigate unsupportive terrain. ''They're doing the work, but they don't make it to the top,'' says Lyn Andrews, president of WebMD Health, a consumer unit of WebMD Corp. ( HLTH) in New York. Many start their own companies, while others seek a different work/family balance than many corporations offer. There are now more than 9 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., double the number 12 years ago.

Sport and Business Connected

Your life is not a bed of roses. At some point in our lives we have all been coached through something for example in an athletic event, the birth of a child, coping with the loss of a loved one, shaving for the first time, or learning how to type.

All of these activities require some form of coaching. Whether it is athletically based or teaching a life lesson, instructors are essential to life. After all, that is what sport and life consist of--setting goals and achieving them.

During conversations with business professionals and professors, I learned that there were five areas that, with incorporation, could efficiently improve employee output. These areas were Teamwork, Communication, Creativity, Time Management, and Leadership. Each was as important as the others and all were dependent on one another. In today's growing global economy, we could very well be coaching our current and future employees to adapt to their changing environment and so better serve the goal(s) of their company.

Teamwork is becoming a lost concept in today's capitalistic approach to accomplishing goals. Human nature compels us to take care of ourselves primarily and make sure that we survive , a characteristic that has crept into the business approach to success.

This natural desire combined with the preference of many professionals to work independently eliminates group discussion, the introduction of multiple opinions, and ultimately prevent the best solution from being utilized.

With the help of team work one can achieve even harder goal.

One person cannot efficiently perform a task without some direction. Coaches are trained to get people to cooperate and to evaluate individual strengths and assign group tasks in order to accomplish the team goal.

Coaches will also put each person in the role that will best prepare him to make the goal achievable. The best teams will be those whose players will do anything for the teammates beside them on game day.

If their biggest fear is letting their teammates down, the coach can consider himself successful. The players have learned the value of teamwork. This concept will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

TEAMWORK:

How can we teach this? In my four years of collegiate experience, I structured the activities outside of football, such as obstacle courses, team bowling, community service, etc., where the players must use all their skills to accomplish a common goal and communicate the best ways to foster togetherness.

These activities enable the players to interact with one another off the field and take care of each other on game day. Management can use the same techniques with their employees. Make the employees see that they are all part of the same family.

Communication accompanies the concept of teamwork. Without it, there is no teamwork, and in order for a business to build it, it must coach its employees to communicate with one another, even use hand signals to communicate everyone's responsibility.

For instance, a quarterback may tap his helmet to let the wide receiver know that he is going to throw him the ball. In response, the wide receiver may tap his helmet to let the quarterback understand what he is supposed to do.

The point is that both players are communicating despite the obstacles and the coach is facilitating the communication.

Co-workers have to overcome obstacles such as distance, difference in personal or business background, language barriers, etc, so they can accomplish the goal of the company.

Sometimes people think that it is impossible to do this task , but one if determined , he can achieve his target.

Coaches are using hand signals to help their teams overcome the screaming crowds by the communication of basic information. The smallest changes in a routine or creative effort are often accepted as a miracle.

For example, Bob Stoops, the football coach at Oklahoma, allows his offensive and defensive linemen to go out for passes or field kicks. He also organizes touch football games in which everyone is allowed to run, throw, or catch the ball.

This may not seem like a novel concept, but when offensive or defensive linemen are allowed to experience these aspects of the game it involves them more in the total team goal.

Stoops is using a creative and constructive (fun) way to condition his players and break up the monotony of the long season.

Business coaches can use this same type of creativity by planning softball leagues, picnics, cooking classes, or encouraging employees to express their ideas on company management. Anyone who wants to learn how to run his business more efficiently can call upon those who are involved in the day-to-day operation of the company.

Like Coach Stoops, we are trying to rejuvenate the attitudes of company employees. Our aim is to convey work as not just a place to collect a paycheck, but as an area in which employees can come to express their creativity, share ideas with one another, and build a bond that will carry over after work is finished.

This gloomy assessment comes from the International Energy Agency, the Paris-based organization representing the 26 rich, gas-guzzling member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The agency is not known for alarmist warnings, and its World Energy Outlook is typically viewed by policy wonks as a solid indicator of global energy supplies. In a marked change from its traditionally bland, measured tones, the IEA's 2007 report says governments need to make urgent, bold decisions on energy policy, or risk massive environmental and energy-supply crises within two decades — crises and shortages that could spark serious global conflicts.


The reason for the IEA's alarm is its expectation that economic development will raise global energy demands by about 50% in a generation, from today's 85 million barrels a day to about 116 million barrels a day in 2030. Nearly half that increase in demand will come from just two countries — China and India, which are electrifying hundreds of cities and putting millions of new cars on their roads, most driven by people who once walked, or rode bicycles and buses. By 2030, those two countries will be responsible for two-thirds of the world's carbon gas emissions, which are the primary human activity causing global warming.

India and China have argued against enforcing strict emission controls in their countries, on the grounds that these could hinder their economic growth and prompt a global economic slowdown. But the new IEA report says working with China and India on alternative energy sources and curbing emissions is a matter of global urgency.

The bad news is not only environmental. As the world scrambles to boost energy supplies over the next two decades, an ever-greater percentage of its supplies of oil and gas will come from a dwindling number of countries, largely arrayed around the Persian Gulf, as the massive North Sea and Gulf of Mexico deposits are finally exhausted. That will leave the industrialized countries far more dependent on the volatile Middle East in 2030 than they are today, and the likes of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran will dictate terms to companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron, which increasingly operate as contractors to state-run oil companies in many producer nations.

"Most of the oil companies are going to be in an identity crisis, and need to redefine their business strategies," Birol says. The soul-searching may have already begun, as oil executives begin sounding the alarm about the supply crunch that lies ahead. Last week, Christophe de Margerie, CEO of the French oil giant Total, told the Financial Times that even the target of 100 million barrels a day is an optimistic one for an industry that currently produces 85 million — far short of the 116 million barrels a day the IEA projects will be needed by 2030 to fuel the global economy.
